Argimusco
The Argimusco area extends over a large plateau between 1165 and 1230 meters above sea level, right in the center of Abacenino's territory, where the Peloritani mountain range meet the Nebrodi. This I'm talking about is the ancient Val Demona, in the province of Messina.
Situated near the village of Montalbano Elicona and the Natural Reserve of the Malabotta's woods, the Armimusco's rocks represent one of the rare examples of natural megalithic complexes of southern Italy. On this naturalistic site, there are millenary stones surrounded by silence that is broken only by the sound of the wind, and the latter along with water shaped the huge rocks, creating particular anthropomorphic and zoomorphic megaliths.
When the man discovered this incredible place, thousands of years ago, began to use it. As they did in Stonehenge the site was used for the observation of the sky. Thus the megalithic rocks and the whole landscape were chosen to practice astronomy, to decipher the movements of the stars, to discover the alternation of seasons and to lay the foundations for a practical and useful calendar.
This atavistic site soon became a natural astronomical observatory, and many of the stones in it were worked out for precise purposes.
Several scientists have proposed studies and theories on the megalithic plateau.
As we said archeologists and archaeoastronomers found ancient tracks that suggest an astronomical and mystical use of the site, but it is still shrouded in mystery.
