There is some long term hope for our oceans with the Ocean Cleanup https://www.theoceancleanup.com -- On one of my visits to Indonesia, I was also disheartened by scenes of rubbish in the seas around the archipelago. So much more needs to be done. The ecobricks you mention http://www.ecobricks.org also help by preventing the plastic from reaching our oceans.
