There are only 2 or 3 people here who know the real me so only they will know what a big deal it is that I even bother interacting with relative strangers let alone 'make friends'. I was the kid who went from school to school in the 70's as we moved around never really having time to make friends, I'm also mixed race and had a massive blonde Afro (seriously) when I was a kid that my Mom used to comb to look like the dude from Boney M!!!!
Getting followers is easy, that's just a number. Some people arrive, follow 4000 people get 1000 follow back and make 10c a post! Making friends who follow you is the trick when working here. And the only way to do that is quid pro quo. You have to give a piece of yourself whether that be chatting in discord or revealing a bit of yourself in your posts and comments, and I don't mean "I'll get my tits out if this post reaches $1000" although sadly that seems to work.
You need to follow your friends, really follow, read their posts , comment, critique, help, advise, lend an ear and be there for them like you do your life long friends. You'll find they'll do the same for you. It pays off trust me.
Post regularly but don't knock out 5-6 poor quality posts a day and moan when you get 5c because you Upvoted yourself and no one else did. One good post every couple of days is way better than trying to flood the platform to get noticed.
Write about stuff you're passionate about. It comes out in the post and feels more real rather than trying to pander to the masses writing about something you don't really know anything about in the hope it will pay well. Take the time to spell check and format properly too. Polished posts look great and are worth more to many voters.
Spend time looking around for people who are into the same things you are, comment on their posts, add value and they often follow you back to see your take on the subject.
Get involved in one of the many groups here, there are national teams like teamgb & teamaustralia. There is Steemsilvergold for those who love collecting precious metals. Photographic groups, cooking, sports you name it. Interact with and join one or two. It helps get your work noticed.
If you are new join discord and get involved with the minnowsupportproject, there is no better way to connect with people and get help and support at the start of your journey. There are so many great Steemians there who are dedicated to helping you. I would be unheard of if not for them. Click this link to start your journey. https://discord.gg/HYj4yvw
I am making quite a slow progress but that's the way I want to advance in steemit. The exact way you described. Following some intresting people and being followed by people that really care about what I have to say. Otherwise it would not be intresting. I don't really see me making friends through discord actually but I can write honest posts and comments.
And I'm sure you'll do great, discord isn't for everyone and there are other networks that can help. Steemchat is great too. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Great advice, plus heartfelt and honest. Thank you.
My favorite thing about steem it is a platform for people to be real and it is troll free. This makes it so people can actually get to know friends and connect. Its rad. It makes me happy. I think you're doing something special here.
I will follow. Cheers. Keep it up
The troll free aspect is fantastic.
Thanks for reading, commenting and following.
Awesome. Cheers!
Wow man, what a passionate start to your post. I can picture you with an afro now :D
All good advice. I hope you consider me a friend. Have a mega muxxy
@gmuxx Thanks for helping out in the Minnow support channel in Discord!
My pleasure
We chat, you help , I mock, what do you think?
You're a top bloke.
Great post my mannn, lot of minnows are currently doing is all wrong, hope they read this and apply it :)
Thanks mate.

Before I keep reading, I'l pay 5 SBD to see a pic of your blond afro, can be private on discord, but I gotta see that!!!
Ooh maybe one day, you'll need to be patient.
you could start a bidding war ;)
Good article, thanks for some advice.
No worries.
Fantastic post and so hearfelt. Thank you for sharing your truth. You have a fascinating story and I'll watching for more. Happy Belated Birthday (I turned 55 in mid June. Upvoted and resteeming for other minnows!
Thank you for reading and the resteem.
Much appreciated.
Happy Belated birthday to you too 😃
Good post. Very honest.
A blonde afro sounds cool. Please tell me you're still sporting it.
Also, I went to Guyana when I did my big trip around South America. It was a cool place. I even got to go to the cricket, which was insane. You could basically do and drink whatever you wanted.
No Afro I'm afraid, shaved it off when I was in Hong Kong a really long time ago.
Grew it once since to show my Mrs as she'd never seen it.
Thx Choo you're the best and one of the chums I spoke of. I hope you know that.
Back atcha!
Congatulations on your 2 months :D I joined this week, so thanks for all the tips you shared. I must admit, I have been considering about posting more often with lower quality content, due to the content I post being lost in a pile of posts within seconds, even when it took a few hours to create it. It's quite disheartening, but I guess this is what I have to force myself through if I ever want to become a dolphin :D Upvoted.
Don't give up buddy. I did good stuff early on IMHO that paid nothing and did a few crappy post that didn't pay either. It's not worth getting a rep for posting shit, as it's difficult to get credibility back.
Focus on posting good content and making friends, you'll get there. Very few start well unless they were known already from YouTube etc. Too many focus on status, whale, dolphin etc and lose focus. I see people obsessing over payouts while offering nothing to the community. They get what they deserve, jack shit!
Sorry if it feels like a lecture buddy it's not meant that way 😜

Hey thanks buddy that kind of you to say.
Steem on bro
Cheers!
Thanks for the advise, glad to meet you here.
Even though we have much different interests, I find I enjoy seeing yourself and others show their true passions here on steemit, because thats what we should all be paid for doing. If I can help by clicking a button, AWESOME!!!
Thx buddy. Great chat earlier.
I'll catch you in discord later.
Cheers for the support dude.
Thank you for sharing :)
Keep it up and good luck!
Thank you.
And thanks for reading and commenting 😀
When we immigrated to America from Italy, the American school system literally began beating the accent out of me. I was in California Public Schools, and was punished every time I rolled my R's and let my tongue relax in any way to allow an accent. Strangely, my Italian schools enjoyed and encouraged my English speak, but that's another story.
My Grandma could never grasp the English language. I know exactly how you feel- I was so ashamed and impatient of my Grandma's Italian showing through. Of course, looking back on it as an adult I feel horrible. Kids. What's wrong with 'em?!
Thank you for sharing :)
I have a question, is there a place to find groups?
Thanks for reading and commenting.
Are you looking for a particular group?
I'm sure we can find what you're looking for.
There are a few I am interested in checking out. I am on my mission of awareness and advocacy, so am keeping my eyes open for likeminds in that area. Is there an easy way to find "groups"? Or do you just start searching until you find?
Just mooch around Steemit and you'll find what your looking for.
You could have a room in discord for like minded people.
Aggroed will set one up for you I'm sure.
Yea, that's what I've been doing.
Ok, I will be talking with aggroed, thanks!

TP
The '70s ...man that was like...half a century ago. ~smiles~
I like that you've put yourself into this post. Giving us all a glimpse of the man behind the shield.
I'm still doing #2 the best that I can. Likely will until the day my HD crashes. Which could be any time as it seems to be doing a lot of data dumping and shutting down lately...whatever that means.
Keep up the great work, you're a shining example of how a minnow thrives and survives!
~be~
Cheers my man.
I appreciate the comment. Kind words bro.
Awesome post. Great advice for newcomers. Glad to have met you and your wonderful sense of 'British humour'!
Right back at ya Scotty
Keep up your great work dude.
You're a top bloke.
great advice
Cheers dude 👍
From the heart TP - nice one mate! SK.
Cheers buddy. I just read scooter77's post about male suicide. Great piece.
Thx again for the support dude.
Awwww ❤❤❤❤
1989 was the first time I encountered racism, some kid at my school tried to push me down the stairs, mum came to school the next day and tried to sort it out but it went on a bit more inside the classroom thats about when I learned about fear and to put an exterior on.
It taught me at a very early age to be tough and be on the offensive and be two steps ahead always. That was the last time I tolerated racism, I was 8 years old, 29 years ago.
So ❤
I know how something like that can change a person.
Good on ya @bearone Wow you're young! Mine was 1973ish Shit I'm old 😂
I was terribly aggressive for years as a result but it wasn't who I wanted to be. Took a long time for me to change and I had to leave the area, and indeed the country to achieve it. When you travel to some of the poorest countries in the world and see people who are stuck in a miserable existence with no possibility of escape you learn humility and the shit you went through seems trivial in comparison.
The old me is still lurking underneath but hopefully he'll stay there.
Thanks for sharing your story and reading mine.
I hear you. I'm glad you've risen above it. Yes life gives us some shitty situations but ultimately we have the power to choose how and who to be and youve done that ❤
I find my aggressive alter ego comes in handy sometimes lol Id rather not whip out the old girl but somedays she just gets the job done you know?
The old me pops out now and again to deal with morons but he's under control 😀
I did this piece today as I was sick of hearing people go on about whales and their money.

Hahah I read it, commented and agree with all your points. Still it was very mild and mellow :)
This really is a powerful post. It's from the heart, which is your words of advice in action. You have a real gift of words, and I love it that you're using this gift to reach others in this way. Great advice for newbies and established Steemians alike. :-)
Thank you Rhonda.
I appreciate the kind words and the great work you are doing.
Great post, really well written and informative. Will follow this post through.
Thanks buddy.
Cheers for reading and commenting.
Hard to argue with any of this. That's a lot of success for two months. I feel like I'm a great deal behind you, though I joined about the same time. More work to do, I guess. Thanks for the road map.
1 post can make the difference and get you noticed. It's luck too I guess however having a proper following is the key along with adding value to the platform.
I know plenty who haven't got their rewards yet who write great stuff, it'll happen eventually.
Good luck dude.
Thx for reading and taking the time to comment.
I believe it will happen eventually. Consistency and persistence are key. But man, it can feel like an impossible hill to climb...
You'll get there dude.
YOU HAD A BLONDE FRO???!!!
Holy crap man...Can you superimpose your ex-fro onto a kermit the frog picture for me??!! :') Please!!
<3 I love reading your personal stuff. I am a bit of a nosey Parker and totally treasure peoples true feelings and bare soul's <3 This is exactly that. Love you and your work dude <3 I am proud to call you a friend. <3
Topdeck and all ;) <3
Yeah babe and a snotty nose!!!!!
And I'm proud to call you a friend too. You're work is brilliant and important.
Did you see there is a 'truth' thread in discord now?
I shall be visiting for sure.
Thx for reading I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Yea, people ware way too obsessed with the wrong numbers.
Thanks for the great post.
You're welcome, I hope you got something from it, and others heed the advice. Especially about never cutting yourself off from making new friends.
Thx for reading and taking the time to comment.
Great advice friend :)
Thanks for reading , I hope it helps some people.
Thank you for the advice. I've joined minnow support too. I really like the people I've met there and I'm relieved to be swimming the vast ocean of Steemit with friends at my side. And yeah, I find that the number of followers do absolutely nothing if they're only there in the hopes you'll follow back. So I quit looking at the numbers.
No worries, good on ya for joining the group, it will help get you noticed.
And thanks for reading and commenting.
Check my latest at @tremendospercy
Good stuff my friend, I hope you class me as one of your new friends. Great story mate and think both of us are going to be hanging around this place for a while so I'll catch you later. Cheers
Anybody who stacks the shiny is a friend in my book dude.
I look forward to getting to know you better as we swim these waters.
Thx buddy.
@tremendospercy Man that was a great post dude .. I really respect your openness, honesty and carefully chosen words! On top of that some great information for all newbie's .. I'm sure it'll serve as a valuable resource for anyone stumbling through their first few days/weeks. Resteemed my man!
Thanks man, from a writer of your calibre that means a lot.
I hope,it helps newbies follow the right path as I do the one I posted today.

You are very good at writing.
Keep going...

Have a look at todays offering and follow for more of you like.

You desirve more money than you earn.
I totally agree, you are very wise 😆
Seriously though I see people putting out great posts and getting next to nothing so right now I'm happy things. Hopefully it will get better for all who are really trying to add value to Steemit. If not it may end up becoming a blockchain version of Animal Farm where everyone is equal but some more equal than others. It that happens it will simply die. And that would be a shame as I really believe in it.
I am sure things will be better. The idea with this freedom of bloggers is unique and for sure 100% procents will survive. In the future steemit will become a house of speach for millions. So don't worry. Blockchain is an empty space: everyone can se everything. So, these nice things that we do, will worth a lot in the future.
Thanks for your advice =) I have been on here a few days now and I keep going back and forth between feeling that this is an awesome place where I can connect and share with people, and feeling that whatever contribution I try to make in the form of posts will always get lost in the sea of new posts going out every minute. You mentioned the different groups that exist; do you know how to find those groups? Cheers!
Thanks for reading and commenting. Don't despair there is plenty of help if you need it.
Which group are you interested in?
Thanks for your reply! You mentioned TeamGB and TeamAustralia so I was wondering if there is such a thing as a TeamCanada =) There are also other groups I might be interested in such as photography, finance, nutrition, etc. So I guess I'm mostly wondering where one would go to find groups that do already exist. Cheers!
There is indeed a team Canada just check in the subjects list and clikck the link to see any posts by the team.
Awesome thank you =)
Thank you very much for sharing
And helping
I am your new follower upvoted
Hey dude that's cool of ya. I'm happy to pay it forward after help I've recieved.
Steem on buddy.
Great advice @tremendospercy! And very heartfelt and honest writing too. Thanks for that. Look forward to meeting you again at PAL Discord. Upvoted and following you.
Thx for taking the time to read and comment.
Cheers for following I look forward to seeing your work.
As usual great words @tremendospercy Its amazing how quick this journey goes isnt it! teamaustralia and minnowsupport have been two wonderful communities for me. People just really need to get involved and engaged. Resteemed for you!
I agree with everything you said, it does go quick. And the support has been amazing. Thank you for ten comment and resteem very kind of you.
Great to read your update!
Take care and work hard. See you on PALnet 😀
Thanks buddy. It's good to help the newbies.
Solid advice for new people. Also good for just anyone, in general, to keep in mind. I think overtime quality will stand out over quantity here for the most part.
I hope so, it would be a shame if it doesn't as this is a beautiful platform for spreading the message. Whatever you message is.
Thanks for reading and commenting.
this is excellent advice. Slowly trying to catch up on good peoples posts, wish I had to read this earlier.
I enjoy getting your stuff pop up. But I would have loved to see that blonde afro.
I'm flattered to be considered 'good people'.
Thanks for reading and commenting
Might post a pic of the fro one day.
Great advice! I'm on my second full week and I'm finally figuring out my way around here and learning, sometimes the hard way, how to really get the most out of this platform. I enjoyed your writing. I'm following you now.
Damn -and I came here to see someone take their tits out. Shame ;)
I agree with almost everything. As for the 4 posts per day I have experimented to see what my stats look like and on the weeks I post 3 to 4 times a day are the weeks I make bigger numbers. That being said I am a visual content creator- not a writter. I think visual content could be uploaded at a faster rate where as blog posts need more forethought and planning. What I would do is upload my so-so visual posts throughout the day to get people interested in me throughout the afternoon and then leave my "big" big post either at the start or end of my day. SO I draw new people in and then impress them in thier feed later that day.
Thank you for this ....I find that discord thing baffling
It can seem hectic when you arrive however there any many rooms to chat in with different themes, with like minded Steemians .
Thanks for reading the post and commenting.
Being brand new to Steemit I appreciated the transparency in this post!
