Building Stepping Stool for My Sister
Recently my sister had an open heart surgery and they recommended she use a stepping stool to get in and out of bed. So I decided I would make her one...a beautiful decorative one!!!
Here's what I used:
- [ ] Kreg Jig
- [ ] Clamps
- [ ] Circular Saw
- [ ] Electric Drill
- [ ] Painter's Pyramid
- [ ] Safety Goggles
- [ ] Electric Hand Planer
- [ ] Measuring Tape
- [ ] Square Framing Carpenter Measure Ruler
- [ ] Valspar DuraMax Dark Chocolate base semi-gloss exterior
- [ ] Valspar DuraMax White semi-gloss exterior
- [ ] Valspar Crackle Glaze
- [ ] MiniWax Polyshades: Mission Oak Gloss
Here are the different phases to this project:
First thing you'll want to do is cut out some of the really rough spots with a planer and sander
Once sanded down you can measure, cut and mark sides
Without screwing anything in, I just rested the top boards to see where the steps should rest to determine how much over hang I want on the sides.
Then comes the staining part. I really like Polyshades because it's got both the stain and the polyurethane mixed together. It does dry kinda quickly and you will want to do some very light sanding between layers...that is...if you do more than one coat.
Next comes the base paint. This is the color you want to show through the cracks of the white paint. Gives it that nice aged rustic look.
Next, you put on the Valspar Crackle Glaze, which is clear on top of the dark chocolate paint and wait maybe 2 or 3 minutes and the start to put on the white paint. In a few minutes after putting on the white paint you will see the crackle taking place!
In the end, just screw in the top stepping boards and you're done!!!
I really like this dark wood color :-)
This was my wife's concept idea of what she'd do with hers...meaning...I need to make another one :-P
I really hope you liked this post, if so, upvote and share! I'll try and put a few more of my wood projects I've done.

Nice work on the stepping stool. Looking forward to more. thanks for posting.
Thanks, I'm really just an IT guy...but I like to make it instead of buying it when I can. It just feels more satisfying :-)
My next post I want to make it about the project that got me started with wood working.
I'll be looking for it
