Of Heaven: A poem that shows we're born without a religion

in #life8 years ago (edited)

When religion is driving people to commit unbelievable atrocities against their own race, I wonder at what stage in their lives people start identifying with their religion. This reminds me of a poem I wrote a few years ago, in which I tried to capture the innocence of a child. It shows how we are not born with any emotional attachment to concrete structures, but we are programmed with it as we grow up. This is how the poem went:

Mama, why do you take me to the church?

I won’t lie, it’s so bore

And,Jesus will lead me to heaven

How can you be so sure?

All that you talk about heaven

Unlimited candies and ice cream too

To heaven you have ever been?

I doubt if all that is true

But if it is,

Then Rashid's mama doesn’t love him much

She never takes him to the church
