I have written before about how I donated a kidney so my oldest son 23 years ago. I wanted to write a post about it and open it up for people to ask questions and to discuss being an organ donor. For people to help others who may be thinking about doing it themselves.
Also to leave your organs upon passing to help others.
Here is an article on WebMD about organ donations.

A kidney is the most popular organ that is donated. My donation took place in 1994. I was in the hospital for 7 days. My son for 30 days. I am sure that all these years later those times of stay may be different. I would like to hear from someone who has done it more recently.
The cut that they need to make on me went almost half way around my midsection. Just about from the middle of my stomach to my spine. Now I have heard they only need to make a small incision to remove the kidney.
I can say that for a short while after I donated my kidney I was uncomfortable trying to find anyplace to rest. Sitting in a chair was uncomfortable, standing or lying in bed. It didn't matter. But again it was only for a short while and there wasn't any pain.
I have never had any side affects from giving a kidney and in no way has it had any negative impact on my health. I am quite healthy. So I can say 100% that in no way has it affected my having only 1 kidney.
I have had two full checkups on the past 5 years with different doctors. Both of them told me I was the healthiest guy they had ever seen my age ( I am 56 ). Now, I have never done drugs or used tobacco. Rarely drink. I have a few extra pounds.
But I can say giving a kidney was a wonderful experience. Of course it was my son so there was no question that I would do it.
My son is doing great with it to this day.
I would like to hear what you think.
