In every social/media advice corner today, I see people try to encourage others to stick with themselves, grow their own peculiar giant defences and stop expecting sincerity, love, and loyalty from other people.
It is now a movement. Everyone is, or learns to be self sufficient. We are our own king!

We now live in times when values and what used to be precepts of morality have been seriously quizzed, and everyone has become a virtual judge of things they do/do not understand.
Today, unless you can exhibit a certain degree of negativity, waywardness, disrespectfulness, you are called a fake. To be real, you have to dig up an unnecessary and a probably buried dark part of your humanity, or sometimes, create one where non-existent, before you're given attention or the chance to raise any point.
Well, what could we have done? We had to find a way to deal with the deceit, treachery, evil, that is almost saturating our planet space.
Because, how can it be explained that today, one's own family can turn out the bane of his existence; or that an unimaginable ton of hatred can be piled up against you in the heart of someone who does not, and may never get to know you personally, just so that jealousy finds a place in the dictionary; how about couples who grow deep, undiluted affection for each other today, and still find reason to hold knives to each other's throat tomorrow?
How can all the shame, disappointment, pain, be explained or excused?
No.
We had to find a way to survive.
By hook or by crook.
And we did!
The evidence is everywhere. People are now leveling up, gluing together their pieces and protecting the scars with every ounce of life in them.
No trusting + No expectations - someone's opinion = Freedom.

And for those who try and still cannot strike a balance, they just commit suicide and fall out of the line because they don't stand a chance. After all, the battle is not for the weak. They were weak enough to absorb life's hassles from childhood; survive joblessness, hunger and diseases; some even got married with children through it all, and then they take their own lives, because they're simply WEAK.
OK.
I see we have pretty much created our own happiness and made it exist, mainly because we now understand it is our sole responsibility, and we do not have to pay a mind to what anyone may think or who gets hurt in the process, because everyone is imperfect, and there's always going to be someone out there worse than our worst, so we just do us.
I would like to know however, if things are so perfect the way they are, why then do you wish you could get a hug when certain emotions start rushing in?
Why is it the fear of being perceived as weak by people that makes us not show emotion?
Why does it feel good to be called strong by the very people we fight our way through to independence and freedom?
Why do we have to prove to them we don't need them if we really do not need them?
Why do they even matter still?
Maybe because we wish they weren't such toxic moving and thinking objects to have around, or maybe I do not know the answer. But I'd like to clarify..
Are you very certain the smiles and cheers you get are all fake?
Can you honestly not tell who would hold you up if they had the chance?
Is there absolutely no way you can know the ones that would be in pain if you dropped dead today?
Are you certain you can't pick up signals from people that are genuinely willing and ready to help?
If yes, cool. You got your six.
If no, then isn't there a way these people can be spared a chance to even breathe in your direction, or have you really run out of chances?

From this end though, the way it actually looks is that being a rigid, narcissistic, bulletproof factory, is different from being self sufficient. The bottle of emotions you try so hard to drown in your mind's sea is not only floating, but has had its spillage scattered all about you, and has people recognizing, touching, and some even tossing them about in an unfair advantage.
We do care about people, and sometimes those are not the same people that care about us, but everyone exists to be loved and cared for, and you are.
Admittedly;
Some will not be worthy of your chances,
Some will not cheer if you win a lottery,
Some will not throw you a life jacket if you're drowning,
Some will not laugh at your not-so-funny jokes or nod at your crazy impossible ideas...
But some will.
And they deserve you, as much as you deserve them.
Going through life without them is possible, but unnecessary.
Search deep within and set yourself free.
