It’s another year of graduation season, after the final examination, it’s time to choose university and major. After graduating from university, need to choose to work overseas or work nearby. In the future, marriage, house, and car also need to make a choice.
Many of the choices in life will affect the rest of your life, and even some people suffer from having a hard time to make a choice.
I am also someone who can’t easily make a choice. So, as a "veteran," I want to write about this kind of symptoms so that I can help you.
Fear of making a choice, as the name suggests, is when facing choice will be unusually difficult to make their own satisfaction choice.
When decisions have to be made in several choices, anxiety, panic, even sweating, and ultimately the inability to choose, lead to some degree of fear of making a choice.
So, how to overcome the fear of making a choice?
I have summed up three methods.
First, change your thinking, from "perfect" thinking into "man can't be perfect" thinking
When people make choices, they always want to choose the most perfect and the most profitable option, but the fact is, there is no perfect exists in this world.
Especially when facing two different options, you must know that different ruler has different length, no matter which option you choose, you will have varying degrees of interest, and also to leave regret to a certain extent.
So, learn to change your thinking.
If you have an option that makes you satisfied, choose it and cling to it.
Jeffrey Hughes and Abigail A.scholer, psychologists from the University of Waterloo, did a study on fear of making a choice.
Research has shown that excessive thinking and pursuing perfection can turn people off from satisfying answers.
So, please do not waste your precious time and energy on choosing the perfect choice.
Second, after locking-in an option, temporarily "isolate yourself" from this matter
After careful consideration and comparison, decisively select an option.
Then believe it is the best, do not think about it, do not inquire, and temporarily cut off from the matter.
Put all your energy and time on your next thing, people's energy is limited, I believe, your anxiety and annoyance will slowly fade away.
In the beginning, if you really can't control your thoughts, you can also give yourself some psychological hints, meditate in your heart: "This is the best choice." It may not be effective at first, but after several times you will see the results.
Because people’s subconscious will gradually accept it and recognize it.
Third, prepare for the worst, and surrender to it
If both of these methods are not helpful, then simply burn the bridges and prepare for the worst.
Most of the time, people who have a hard time making a choice are afraid of failure and are afraid of the consequences of making decisions. So, against this, we preset the worst results. Just imagine, if you can accept the worst results, so what else is not acceptable?
If it is not a matter of life and death, what else can’t you face calmly?
As long as we did the things we can do, and the rest is not in our control. If the worst results are met, you can only learn to surrender and accept reality. We cannot defy destiny because of how hard we try.
Moreover, many things won’t be as bad as we think.
As long as you are thankful, have a kind heart, these will be your energy magnetic field attracting all the good things.
