An armed society is a polite society.
Guns are no different than any other tool in the hand of those using it, respect the tool, respect the handler of the tool.
Does a awakening need to happen more, maybe, but in spite of all the weapons in the world and in spite of all the people in the world, only a select few use the weapons to kill others and many are in self defense to keep from being killed themselves.

I don't see much evidence of politeness in much of America. I don't think South Central LA is known for politeness.
There are going to be pockets in the world, but what percentage does not use guns? Well under 1/4, 1/8, 1/32 percentage or is it even less and not more? Just because folks have a gun does not mean that is their first option. With any tool comes the responsibility of using it as it was meant to be used.
