Artist's Impression of similar events ... :)
I was eight, maybe nine years of age, living in my hometown just outside of Belfast during the school summer holiday.
Every night, darkness was coming earlier as the long summer evenings were starting to shorten. It was my favourite time of the year for sky watching. That's what I did back when I was a kid - once the stars came out I'd stare and stare at them from wherever I was, through my bedroom window or out in the street where I'd be loitering as long as I could, avoiding going home.
It was in those late summer skies where I spotted my first unidentified flying object.
It was just a star at first. A brilliantly bright star hanging low in the southern sky. A light so brilliant that I instantly fixated on it as something unusual, not belonging there, way brighter than any planet I'd ever seen. What the hell is that?
(Though really it looked more like this, Venus, but even brighter ...)
While I stared at it, I noticed a smaller light off the right. A red light, like a helicopter, an aircraft, though it wasn't blinking. And it was moving across the sky headed STRAIGHT for the bright star.
Hey, it looks like it's going to pass right in front of it, I realised. So I kept watching as it moved closer to the star. Closer and closer and closer until I could see how much smaller it was than the star, maybe a quarter of its size ... And as it came right up to the star – about to cross in front of it, or so I thought – the little red light touched the side of the brilliant star and STOPPED there. Like it was suddenly attached to it.
By then my heart was yammering in my chest.
I looked around for someone to share what I was seeing, but I was alone.
And so I looked on, with the cool night air swirling in my open mouth, and I saw the brilliant star begin to MOVE, with the red light fixed firmly to its side - as though it really was docked to it. Ever so slowly the 'star' and the red light MOVED across the sky as one, back the way the red light had just come from. Minutes passed, though I lost sense of time. The hairs were standing up along my spine.
I knew I was watching something truly strange.
I knew I was watching my very first UFO.
And then, just like that, pfff, it was gone.
