Hi community, this year i travelled to Merida, in this travel i met Sanson, a dog from Merida-Venezuela. I saw it in the monument to Nevado dog. When I saw it, it seemed like an extraordinary dog and that's why I share the history of its breed and its historical importance.
MUCUCHIES.
The Mucuchies is a dog breed originally from Venezuela, born 400 years ago in the Paramo de Mucuchíes, Cordillera Andina of the state of Mérida. It was originated by the crossing of the dogs the Pyrenean Mastiff, Spanish Mastiff, Shepherd of Atlas and Great Pyrenees. Brought by the Spaniards in colonial times. It was declared like an own race original of Venezuela and is in danger of extinction.
HISTORY
It had historical importance, because the Liberator of America Simon Bolivar during his admirable campaign went through the Páramo de Mucuchíes, where a peasant gave him a dog of that breed and called it Nevado(Snowy). He have taken him and took him on his long trips. In the battles he was always next to Bolivar, it is said that once in a battle they would attack him from behind and the dog attacked the enemy who was mortally wounded. His dog was killed by a bullet at the Battle of Carabobo on 06/24/1821
