Five years ago I was at my cousin’s wedding, dancing with one of them. Near me was my 91 years old grandmother dancing like a teenager. At that moment I just wanted to be like her. Full of life. Without fear. To fully live the present moment.
This year my grandmother would have turned 95. Instead of celebrating her birthday, I’m writing a eulogy at her death and I’m getting ready to attend her funeral, where her life will be celebrated.
Saying goodbye to a loved one can be a traumatic experience. But if you’re lucky enough to meet a person who profoundly affected your life, that person stays in your heart forever. We often influence others without even realizing it. My grandmother taught me things that changed my life, things that I’ve learned from her way of working and living. And my grandmother was an example of how to live a full and rich life.
At her last birthday I asked her: ‘’ How did you get through the difficult times of your life?’’ She smiled and looked at me. ‘’ Eventually all things have a solution, right? It makes no sense to worry about things. All of them have a solution anyway.’’
Here are 15 life lessons that I’ve learned from my grandmother
- Needing someone it’s not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that you love yourself.
- Sometimes the biggest mistakes lead to the greatest successes.
- Do not worry about what you can’t control. What matters is the present.
- If you look back at your life, pick the good memories.
- Nothing happens without a reason.
- There is no ‘’ somewhere’’ where you need to go to. Life is about the journey taken, not the final destination.
- If you always look at the positive side of things it does not mean that you are naïve. It means that you are confident and know that everything happens for a reason. Because it is!
- Do not cling on relationships, places or jobs that no longer have a purpose and must end.
- Strangers are friends you have not met yet.
- You’ll be happy and free if you let go the things that you can’t change.
- Forgiveness does not mean you let go of the past. But to be open to the future.
- Family is the most important. You may not always be together, but when you are with your family, you have everything you need.
- Stop taking yourself so seriously. A smile can change a difficult situation.
- Never underestimate a good book. Reading is like daydreaming.
- No matter how hard a thing is, eventually everything will be fine. Always is.
A life lived with purpose is the wonderful gift from my grandmother.
