What day is today? 🙏
Sometimes I used to wonder, why we have created so many days like Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Children’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Siblings Day, Grandparents Day, this day, that day… ! But have you ever reflected a day or a festival or something which you regularly look forward to, every year? It may be your own birthday or the big day of someone who is very close to your heart. Try to think of that day, what do you recall?
When I try to reflect upon past anniversaries of such days, I’m surprised to see how distinctly I can recall several years from my forgetful memory and recollect how this day was spent several years back! It occurred to me that these calendar dates which have some special meanings unconsciously create indelible memories in our life. We cherish those memories while looking back to the time we had spent in our lives.
Memories often mark our growth as an individual over time. Sometime its funny to see how we ourselves used to behave, think or act in past and what changes maturity had brought in ourselves now. But how about creating memories consciously?
Well, most of us always have a camera in our pocket these days and we love taking pictures every now and then. Although I’m in the process of cultivating the habit of taking frequent photographs, I still don’t take my own photos. But the photos in which we too are present, create more relatable and better memories of our life. Unfortunately, most of the photographs we take are carelessly deleted or stocked somewhere, where they are difficult to access for us.
Just like we write a daily diary, we need to arrange all our digital pictures in files that are searchable by date. So when we have tons of pictures, still we can easily search according to the day or month of a year.
This Father’s Day, I recall a Ted talk delivered by a photographer called Steven Addis who had inspired many people to create conscious memories by taking photographs with their child.
Steven and his daughter used to pose for a photograph every year at a same spot in New York. He did this regularly for 15 years …and may be later too (as he was continuously following this ritual until this talk in 2012).
Do check this 3 minute Ted video to watch his story in his own words.
On this Father’s Day, I dedicate this post to Steven Addis for fostering this beautiful father-daughter bonding. I feel, this one-photo-a-year ritual is the easiest step to strengthen Father-child bond.
- What does Father's Day means to you?
- Do you cherish your past memories?
- Do photographs play an important role in creating memories?
I'd be waiting to hear from you.
I actually find father's day, mother's day, etc quite unnecessary but it is still nice to do something together with the family on such days every year
WOW, that's a good take. These days are a good excuse to celebrate with our family.
hello, I do not really have very treasured memories of father's day, because my link between my father and me is one of those distant ones, however, I am one of the people who love to take pictures, I believe that this is how moments are captured. memory we begin to fail a photo can take us to a clearer memory of that moment, I think that in our present is simpler to save them, we have a huge network, storage on the internet and in this way the photos are not lost out there, in cd, or even worse in rolls that we would never reveal. I like all this about the photographs, I think they can show us how the changes have been and in this way show others what we are referring to, not only in our memory. Thank you for sharing your concerns, as well as those videos that I had certainly seen and I still love. Exactly what that is about ...
I can understand. I agree with you that these days we can easily store photographs online and that comes in handy whenever we want to refer to them. Photographs do help in making our memories lucid and crystal clear.
Happy shooting!
I am the ultimate cynic when it comes to days like fathers or mothers day. They are a big way for certain branches to make more money.
I don't think that capturing a moment in a photo is necessary to forge memories. On the contrary, I think it actually devalues them as it does devalue the human memory because there is no point in actually memorizing anything if you can just look at past pictures you will never look at again.
I do cherish my memories even though there are a lot unpleasant ones among them.
Unpleasant memories are more valuable experiences than pleasant ones because they always come with a lesson.
Can't agree more
That's great. I love it when people agree with me.
If I were to rank the value and importance of different kinds of memories, it would be like
You're right that these days are actually the result of over commercialisation.
Sometimes, I do feel that the act of photographing interferes those very moment we want to treasure. I prefer if someone randomly takes our natural pictures without our knowing of it, than intentionally posing for a camera. Traditionally, we always used to depend on our own memory to reflect upon our past. I don't feel that photography devalues our memory. We can still recall those moments through our memory. But if a photo does exist, it can sharpen our memory for those moments but it sure ends any chances of a vague description with the help of some of our imaginative / creative story around it.
Yes, it's best if you can recollect past from your sharp memory unaided by any photo.
Photograph always pay a great roll for capturing any moment. Father
s day for all dads to relax and kick back their feet and enjoy the day. It
s also a day to go visit your dad or give a call and just have a chat.Everyday should be fathers day !
Congratz to all dads!
Sorry for delay. But happy fathers day. We should celebrate Father's day every day by giving respect and by good conversation with father.
