The Plattsburgh Knot & Its Advantages
A properly tied Plattsburgh knot shows a rather symmetrical and elongated triangle shape – with a small opening at the bottom.
Its structure is less broad than most knots of a similar bulk (such as the St. Andrew knot) which makes it pretty compatible with spread collars.
That’s basically why it’s a great choice for bigger guys with narrower faces. On the other hand, a wider knot would run the risk of accentuating the lack of width of a man’s face or torso.
In terms of necktie material and design: Plattsburgh knots go extremely well with smooth-surfaced ties that display either (1) a simple pattern or (2) a solid color.
The idea behind it is to let the symmetrical triangle be the focus – and keep the rest of the tie classy. That makes the Plattsburgh knot perfect for business-related functions.
The tying method requires more “passes” than other necktie knots in general. So be extra careful during the process to keep the turns as even and symmetrical as possible, pulling all slack out of each one. The final result will be absolutely worth it.

How To Tie A Tie: The Plattsburgh Knot – Step #1
Drape the necktie around your collar with the seam (back side) exposed. The thick end should be hanging on your left side while the narrow end is on your right.
The Plattsburgh is tied using the thick end – and requires a lot of cloth. So make sure that the tip of the thick end starts 4-5 inches lower than the desired finishing position.

Cross the thick end of the tie underneath the narrow end from left to right. This forms an X-shape – and you need one hand to grasp the intersection point. Take note that you’ve now got the loop around your collar.
With the thick end on your right, flip the tip upward over the front of the loop. This causes the front side of the thick end to be exposed.

Tuck the thick end through the loop and bring it back toward your left side.

The thick end should emerge downward on the left of the narrow end – with the seam exposed once again. Grab hold of its tip and point it upward. You’re about to perform a second wrap-around motion.

Bring the thick end back up in front of the loop – still staying to the left of the narrow end.
At this point, the front side of the thick end is exposed and the tip should be pointing downward. You’re about to pass it through the loop.

Tuck the thick end through the loop – going downward and emerging on your right side once again. At this point, you start seeing the knot come to life.
Point the tip of the thick end toward the left to prepare it for the next step.

Bring the thick end horizontally across the front of the knot from right to left. The front side should now be completely exposed.
Go ahead and slip a finger in between the knot and the horizontal band you just created. This “gap” is going to be crucial in a couple of steps.

Tuck the thick end through the loop around your collar – going upward and passing from behind the loop. Finish this step off with the tip of the thick end pointing downward.
How To Tie A Tie: The Plattsburgh Knot – Step #9
Feed the thick end down through the horizontal band (using the gap with your finger in Step #7). Tug it all the way through and snug it down firmly. At this point, the shape of the knot is nearly complete.
Now you just have to tighten the necktie – by holding the knot with one hand and pulling on the narrow end with the other. Use your fingers to slightly adjust the edges, so that the whole thing looks symmetrical.
Note: The Plattsburgh is NOT a self-releasing tie knot – you must reverse all these steps to undo it.
