Those patterns are great but what do they mean, eh? Eyes to scare off a predator? Lots of animals have similar patterns that they flash when threatened but with peacocks it's all about sexual selection. I'm fairly sure they don't display when being threatened.
There used to be three of four of them where I worked. I saw this male displaying once and I couldn't help notice the way it was contracting / relaxing its butt-hole rhythmically as it displayed. Maybe the ladies like it? Maybe the male just had an itchy arse that day?
