I was invited 2 weeks ago to join an NFT Exhibition by one of Malaysian's well known sketch artist. If you're wondering about the hype and status of NFTs in Malaysia, I can tell you that it's picking up and the hype among these artists are going above and beyond to get awareness to people who wants to get involved in the NFT scene. We have several community members already starting their own projects, NFT play to earn games and many more. The NFT scene in Malaysia is bustling. When my friend invited me, I couldn't say no. I wanted to be the first to attend such a revolution event and to check the landscape of how well Malaysians are doing in this scene.
Of course, I had to invite a few friends who are interested in this scene to join me. Some of them are even starting their own NFT projects but do not know where to find a community of like minded people. Hence, this would be a good place to start meeting NFT artists.
This event is organized by Portals. You can follow them on twitter, https://twitter.com/PortalsHorizon.
We started the day with an early breakfast. My friends and I carpooled together at 9am to head to Jalan Tun HS Lee, LOKL Coffee and Co for our breakfast. This was also our first time trying out this coffee and breakfast place and it was a delight to see such a nice comfy place in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Just about a few hundred meters from our place is the Merdeka Square and you can see the Old heritage British colonial buildings surrounding the square. Malaysia was once colonized by the British and that is why our history has footprints of them.
Around the city blocks, there are also various coffeeshops and food places to chill and eat. 9am, and the traffic has already started to picked up. After our meals, we drove about 3km to the NFT exhibition. I picked this breakfast spot because the event was nearby as well.
The Event was held in a old British colonial building, hence why you can see the design of the building is as such. You enter the huge door and you're welcome by many indie artist selling their artworks and merchandises. The interior of the building was pretty spacious. I can understand why artsy-fartsy events can be held here.
The event runs across three days, Friday to Saturday. On Saturday and Sunday, the agendas were packed with art shows, crypto talks, projection mapping shows at night and many others. I only attended Saturday but I've seen on instagram that they had open mic sessions and drum circle on Sunday!
Overall, I enjoyed the time spent there as I got to see many NFT people at the event. The whole NFT scene is still very new to Malaysia and I hope this picks up well in months to come. I know NFT have benefitted many of my friends and this such revolutionary project should be adopted by masses. It is our duty to share the wealth so the phrase 'starving artist' will no longer be applicable in time to come.
Have a great weekend ahead!
