You don't need to be able to walk in order to be a body builder, and Johnny Quinn has proven this fact time and again.
Nineteen years ago, the 40 year old "Johnny Quinn" from Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania, was in a motorcycle accident that left him with two broken femurs, a broken arm, a broken jaw, and severe head trauma, according to the New York Times. But his most damaging injury was a shattered T9 vertebra, resulting in him being paralyzed below his chest.
When Johnny Quinn began to get used to life in a wheelchair about a year later, he decided he was ready to go back to the gym so he could shed the pounds he had gained after his accident. And soon after, he read about a wheelchair bodybuilding show in a magazine.
In 2001, Johnny Quinn entered his first competition, and was the only adaptive competitor. He quickly fell in love with the sport and signed up for wheelchair nationals a year later. And in 2010, he became the National Physique Committee wheelchair champion.
After the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness added a class for disabled athletes, Johnny Quinn became one of about 24 professional wheelchair bodybuilders in the world.
“Bodybuilding is my life,” he said. “It opened the door for me to share my beliefs, my faith, and how I really got here. I don’t need to walk to live.”
This is an inspiring story.
