In this post, I would like to share and reveal something about me.
I am a hoarder, before... I’m proud to claim and say that I’m a minimalist for more than 2 years now. I didn’t know that the word minimalism exists until I started to know Marie Kondo and watched some inspiring videos about decluttering and downsizing. I also enjoy watching tiny house living.
I was a hoarder because that is the norm in our house. I grew up where consumerism is a practice and throwing unnecessary things is like a sin. Remembering my old room,it was small and narrow that I cannot move well. It’s full of crammed items. It was stressful to enter in my room and most of the time I don’t know where to find the things I need. Recalling my life, I view shopping as therapeutic and it brings me joy. Whenever I get stressed, I go to the mall and make sure that I won’t go home without a single purchase. As a result, I have accumulated lots of stuff especially clothes in my closet. The funny thing is, I’m still struggling everyday in deciding what to wear.
So, in 2017 when we moved into our new house, I slowly get rid of unimportant stuffs. I started with my closet, then went through my shoes, bags, etc. While decluttering, I was overwhelmed with the huge pile. I found things that I barely or never used and worn at all. Some even have price tags. I was really hit and came to realize that I wasted a lot of money.
I remember during the extreme decluttering process, I applied the KonMari method. From folding to storing. I even ask myself every time I hold an object if it sparks joy. Then I categorized them into 3 piles- Keep, Sold, Donate.
Little by little, my stuffs reduced into half. It’s a refreshing feeling to have a wider space. It’s proven that “less is more.” Now, I have more time for more important things. More money is saved because I started smarter purchasing. More energy and peacefull mind too because now I’m living with less, consume less, and use what I only have.
Clear space is easy to maintain
Now I love basics
From 20 pairs to 8 pairs
During this stay at home time, this is my chance to go through other stuffs like books, accessories, and other knick-knacks. I don’t want to relapse back into my old hoarding days.
I hope this post inspires you. Perhaps, I’ll be posting more of topics like this. See you in my minimalism series.
