I think I had a monopod, but that one was taken by another tourist.

So you set the camera up for them. Do you remember advising them as to how to correctly maintain your position in the frame? It's easy for a non-photographer to screw up the composition unless you prepare to crop aggressively if need be.

I did give instructions, but I still had to crop out a bit on the right hand side because they were too far to the right, which is why the photo is almost square.

I always select a tourist with a nice camera hanging around their neck :) . I know it doesn't mean that much but at least it shows they might have some experience.
