Hello HIVEs!
After several weeks of preparation, the vernissage of my exhibition "Nachtaktiv & Durchgedreht" took place on Friday 16.02.2024 in Steinhagen Town Hall. This was certainly one of the highlights of the year for me. Well over 100 guests attended the vernissage, which I hadn't expected.
Nach mehrwöchiger Vorbereitung, fand am Freitag den 16.02.2024 die Vernissage meiner Ausstellung "Nachtaktiv & Durchgedreht" im Steinhagener Rathaus statt. Dies war sicher schon einer der Höhepunkte in diesem Jahr für mich. Weit mehr als 100 Gäste besuchten die Vernissage, damit hatte ich nicht gerechnet.

The Preparations
The preparations cost me a lot of effort and, above all, time. Starting with the selection of the pictures for the theme, some of them had to be printed first.
This was done by WitheWall
WhiteWall and MeinFoto.de for me.
WhiteWall provides the higher quality images, but is 4x more expensive than Meinfoto. Quality has its price.
Die Vorbereitungen kosteten mich einiges an Kraftanstrengung und vor allem Zeit. Angefangen bei der Auswahl der Bilder zum Thema, mussten die Bilder teilweise erst gedruckt werden.
Dies erledigte WitheWall
WhiteWall und MeinFoto.de für mich.
Wobei WhiteWall die qualitativ hochwertigeren Bilder liefert, aber 4x teurer ist, als Meinfoto. Qualität hat ihren Preis.
The Preparations
First, I created a plan on a floor plan of the town hall foyer. After I had distributed the pictures on the plan, I created a map with the help of
KUNSTMATRIX
to create a virtual 3D exhibition. There I collected all the data about my works, such as size, description, price, etc.
Then I integrated this exhibition into my website
CandelART.de.
Zuerst erstellte ich einen Plan auf einem Grundriss des Foyers des Rathauses. Nachdem ich die Bilder auf dem Plan verteilt hatte, erstellte ich mit Hilfe von
KUNSTMATRIX
eine virtuelle 3D-Ausstellung. Dort sammelte ich alle Daten über meine Werke, wie Größe, Beschreibung, Preis usw.
Danach band ich diese Ausstellung in meine Webseite
CandelART.de ein.

Relaunch Of The Website
Now a caption had to be created for each picture on display. To do this, I used the database on my website and created a PHP file that displayed the data in a suitable layout on the screen. This then had to be printed out and laminated in. On this occasion I created a logo, which can be seen on the top left of each description. I had not yet published many of the works on my homepage. So I first had to upload them to my website and enter them into the database. Then I created the QR codes for each work to direct the visitor to the appropriate website.
Nun musste eine Bildbeschriftung für jedes ausgestellte Bild hergestellt werden. Dafür nutzte ich die Datenbank meiner Webseite und kreierte eine PHP-Datei, die mir die Daten in einem passenden Layout am Bildschirm anzeigt. Dies musste dann ausgedruckt und einlaminiert werden. Bei dieser Gelegenheit kreierte ich ein Logo, welches auf jeder Beschreibung oben Links zu sehen ist. Viele der Werke hatte ich bis jetzt noch nicht auf meiner Homepage veröffentlicht. Also musste ich diese zuerst auf meine Webseite hochladen und in die Datenbank einpflegen. Dann erzeugte ich die QR-Codes für jedes Werk, um dem Besucher auf die passende Webseite zu leiten.
Most of the advertising was done by the municipality. We organized interviews with newspaper reporters, printed posters and invitations and advertised the exhibition on social media. My wife and I then distributed some of the posters and invitations in the community. I worked through a personal invitation list by email and telephone. It was a welcome opportunity to rekindle old friendships and have nice conversations.
Um die Werbung kümmerte sich zum größten Teil die Gemeinde. Es wurden Interview-Termine mit Zeitungsreportern organisiert, Plakate und Einladungen gedruckt und in den sozialen Medien für die Ausstellung geworben. Einige der Plakate und Einladungen haben meine Frau und ich dann in der Gemeinde verteilt. Eine persönliche Einladungsliste arbeitete ich per E-Mail und Telefon ab. Eine willkommene Gelegenheit alte Freundschaften wieder zu beleben und nette Gespräche zu führen.

The Musicians
The whole thing was also to be accompanied by music. So I invited my dear colleague Andreas Altmeyer. He plays classical guitar. I was overjoyed when he accepted and offered to play two pieces during the vernissage together with his guitar teacher LUPO (Thomas Hölscher).
Das ganze sollte auch musikalisch untermalt werden. Dafür lud ich meinen lieben Kollegen Andreas Altmeyer ein. Er spielt klassische Gitarre. Ich war überglücklich als er zusagte und mir anbot zusammen mit seinem Gitarrenlehrer LUPO (Thomas Hölscher) zwei Stücke während der Vernissage zu spielen.
For the opening Andreas and Thomas played the classic Take Five in a fantastic interpretation on the classical guitars.
One day before the vernissage, Wolfgang Milting, my wife Geane and I hung up the pictures in the foyer of the town hall. I distributed a few of my light painting tools in the display cases. Of course, as expected, we changed the plan we had drawn up a little. In the end, everything found its place. To make sure I could give my presentation the next day, I connected my computer to the in-house projector and tested the system.
Einen Tag vor der Vernissage hängten Wolfgang Milting, meine Frau Geane und ich die Bilder im Foyer des Rathauses auf. Ein paar meiner Lightpainting - Tools verteilte ich in den Vitrinen. Natürlich änderten wir, wie zu erwarten den zuvor aufgestellten Plan etwas. Am Ende fand alles seinen Platz. Um sicher zu stellen, dass ich am nächsten Tag meine Präsentation halten kann, schloss ich meinen Computer am hauseigenen Beamer an und testete die Anlage.
The preparations
Now I just had to prepare my presentation. Time was running out. The presentation was to last 15 - 20 minutes and I had only made rudimentary preparations.
So I had to work another night shift: selecting images, writing texts, putting everything together in Keynote and finally writing my presentation text in Pages.
The next day, I looked at the presentation again and put the finishing touches to it. Then I tried to present the written text and made some improvements here too. At the end, I gave the presentation again to my wife Geane. When she had no more objections, I was satisfied and we went on our way.
Nun musste nur noch meine Präsentation vorbereitet werden. Die Zeit wurde knapp. Der Vortrag sollte 15 - 20 Minuten dauern und ich hatte nur rudimentäre Vorbereitungen getroffen. Da wurde noch eine Nachtschicht fällig: Bilder auswählen, Texte schreiben, alles in Keynote zusammenstellen und schließlich meinen Vortrags-Text in Pages schreiben.
Am nächsten Tag schaute ich mir die Präsentation nochmal an und verpasste ihr den letzten Schliff. Dann versuchte ich den geschriebenen Text vorzutragen und besserte auch hier noch nach. Am Ende hielt ich den Vortrag nochmal vor meiner Frau Geane. Als sie keine Einwände mehr hatte, war ich zufrieden und wir machten uns auf den Weg.

The Conclusions
This is my first solo exhibition. It is an insane amount of work to prepare an exhibition that I could never have managed on my own without all the help from the people mentioned above. I would like to thank everyone involved once again!
I have learned a lot and will be able to use this knowledge for the next exhibition, which is planned for November.

Dies ist meine erste Solo-Ausstellung. Es ist irre viel Arbeit, eine Ausstellung vorzubereiten, die ohne all die Hilfe von den oben genannten Personen für mich nie selbst bewältigt hätte werden können. Dafür möchte ich mich bei allen Beteiligten noch einmal ausdrücklich bedanken!
Ich habe viel gelernt und werde das Wissen für die nächste Ausstellung, die für November geplant ist, nutzen können.
Am nächsten Sonntag berichte ich an dieser Stelle wieder eine Story rund ums Lightpainting. Also bleibt dran!
What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Sieht aus, als hätten sehr viele Leute Interesse an Deinen Bildern und unserer besonderen Kunstform. Dieser Erfolg ist sehr erfreulich. Schade, dass ich nicht dabei sein konnte.
Ja, ich bedaure wirklich sehr, dass du nicht dabei warst. Die nächste Ausstellung ist für November 2024 geplant. Vielleicht klappt es dann?

It takes a lot of time and energy to prepare an exhibition. It has a cost too. And it became more and more difficult to sell artwork. That's why I decided to stop it in 2018, unless the event includes a workshop or a photocall.
Fortunately, I don't have to make a living from it. I do it because I like it. that's a circumstance in which money and time play a subordinate role. That's why I like doing it for the audience and the community.
