Highly Recommended Linux Apps & Add-Ons PART 2!

in #linuxlast year

This is the 2nd list video like this that I've done.
It includes apps, utilities, and extensions.
In this post I'll look at some behind-the-scenes details about the video, and the work that went into producing it.

Apps are in segmented categories that I demonstrate and show you where you can get them.
Many are also available to you Windows & MacOS users.

Categories:

  • Desktop Mods
  • Creative Media
  • System Utilities
  • RSS Clients
  • Social Media
  • Gnome Extensions
Editing Notes:

As with the prior video (created at least a year ago), I added animated titles for the categories, and even animated logos for each app.

I use Inkscape for this, and then add effects/animations in Kdenlive.
Many apps have SVG logos easily available online, but some only have basic branding images that I convert to SVG. Such as Vokoscreen-NG which had the monitor icon, but no real typeface brand logo so I took some creative license with that one.
In the case of FSearch they only had a generic magnifying glass so I made one from scratch. I shared it with the project, but it doesn't scale well as an official icon and I didn't have time to make it into one. Maybe I will continue on it as they did like the general look.

The category titles are created entirely from scratch as well. I used black and white texture images that I added color to before shaping them into the backgrounds.

There are a few app logos in the screenshot that didn't make it into the video sadly. Simply because I ran out of time and the video ended up being a little long at nearly 34 minutes.

Security Threat!

Another app was removed for security reasons.
I tested the app, and even recorded the footage for it.
It's called Deskscreen, and it's a cool concept that lets you use your phone or tablet as a wireless monitor for your computer.
It worked well and it was easy to use. You just had to scan a QR code, and it would automatically share the desktop my phone.
However, I was concerned about the possible security risk involved so I ran it and did a TCPtrack scan to watch my network ports.
It turned out that it was using 5900 VNC/RDP protocol to share the screen which was not surprising, but there were other ports sending data remotely off my network 3131 & 1716. I looked them up, and they were ports associated with several malware and trojan attacks:

Additional Work:

For the past few videos I've begun recording "face-cam" shots in the new studio using a GoPro Hero 8.
This led to me using color correction on that footage, and for the past 2 videos I blur the background wall of the studio then use Alpha Masking effects to make myself clear and in-focus.
Here's the original:

And here it is after color & blur work:

Makes a big difference huh?

I also try to incorporate music I make into many of my videos.
I produce my own attempts at electronic music, no lyrics. Sometimes I'll record a little guitar interlude.
In this video I recorded a little intro section on my Korg Monologue and I spruced that up with some effects in Kdenlive.

I even added some little "splice-frame" moments like this one where Peace? is flashed on the screen and I used RGB-shift on just me, but not the rest of the screen:

I like making more stylized videos, but it dramatically increases the amount of overhead work needed to produce my videos.
I currently record the tutorial parts first on my main workstation in one studio, and then I do the dialogues/intro/outro parts in the new studio using the GoPro & capturing the audio via laptop.
Hopefully this will become easier/streamlined when I get another workstation computer setup.

I don't earn anything(yet) on any of the videos or content I produce.
So please like, share, & subscribe to me on one of my video platforms because it helps motivate me to keep working.
My Youtube channel is currently my largest with 809 subscribers.
But I also post to:
Odysee
Bitchute
Rumble
because I fully support alternative tech platforms, including this one.
On my Youtube there are also links to my Minds, Instagram, and Twitter accounts which are all also very small.
The content I make doesn't work quite as well on those platforms, but I'm trying to change that.
I'm also trying to find a way to make live content.

If you like any of the graphics, videos, or music that I make, and would like me to create branding assets for your project leave a comment and we can go from there.
I've done design work for many bands in the past, and various projects for websites, memorials, etc.

An interesting selection of programs. It's a pity that the developers have finished working on the Peek.

Wow I hadn't even noticed that.
I started the video a long while back, and Peek was one of the first apps I recorded for before I shelved the project for a good while.
I see now on their Github the announcement, and last commit was 6 months ago.
It's possible that it will remain useful for a while though since it relies on major libraries.
When it does break hopefully someone will fork it and make the fixes necessary.

I'm working on a critical analysis of GNU/Linux, and backwards compatibility/breaking libraries/API's is one of the major points.
I'm still using Ubuntu 18.04, and I've found several AppImage programs that won't run because of my outdated GLIBC version.

nice :D !

just found peek yesterday
still need a good rss reader which can not only add rss feeds but also normal sites
and youtube and bitchute accounts, etc

so I can have all videos in one "tab" in my rss reader and see all uploaded new videos without an youtube/ google nor even bitchute account :)

tried NewsFlash and RRGuard yet
but didnt quite get it to work how I need it, yet

I think an app like that would be kind of ideal for me, too.
Did you say you need something that doesn't require Youtube & Bitchute accounts?
Because how do you turn those into feeds? I think Bitchute might have an RSS feed option, but I'm not sure.

One you might want to look into is Tangram. I had it in the list of apps for this video, but it didn't make the cut.
Basically it lets you turn any website account/service into a module/app inside of it. It MIGHT be like what you're looking for, idk.
It's like Ferdium, except with any site instead of the socials they've chosen to implement.

When I open my Brave web browser I have 7 windows with around 400 open tabs between them all because I'll see something I want to watch, and plan to come back to it later at some point. Over time I'll copy the URL's and add them into my hundreds of markdown documents as url hyperlinks, and close the tab. Probably never get around to looking at it until months later.
I used to save everything into bookmarks, but I never get around to looking at those. So I ended up making markdown documents with tons of notes and links.
There's just too much stuff and too little time.
