The Giant Ceiling Painting Of The Sao Roque Church In Lisbon

in #lisbon7 years ago (edited)

During our travels we've visited plenty of churches and temples around the world. They're an easy thing to visit but sometime we feel like we're templed / churched out and can't cope with yet anther visit. Mike and I are not very religous but I doubt there are not too many believers who visited more different holy places than us.

But if there is something special to see like the ceiling painting of the Sao Roque we can't get enough. The painting is so detailed and there is so much to see, plus the shear size will confuse your eyes and brain. You just don't know where to look first.

The work can be hard to appreciate in the darkened church, but once your eyes have adjusted, you can see that within this single painting are several other smaller paintings, along with the illusion of a dome and a vaulted ceiling.

The church is truly stunning. It’s not large, but each of its eight chapels is a feast for the eyes. The very first on the right-hand side, to Our Lady of the Doctrine, is a marvel of gilded woodwork, while the last on the left, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, is executed in gorgeous green marble, alabaster and agate. This chapel was constructed in Rome, and then shipped piece by piece to Lisbon.

The attached museum is also well worth a visit, it displays religious artifacts in a beautiful setting and it's not too big that you would get bored or felt overwhelmed.

Below you'll find a video of the Soa Roque Church, you can also watch it on D.Tube if you prefer that. @busy.org is there a way to embed @dtube videos?

Some more information and many more photos of the church and museum are available on our Lisbon Travel Blog.

I think it is incredible the dedication that we can see on most of the ancient churches... nowadays' churches are much simpler!
Thanks for sharing this beauty!

So much art and culture in these old churches ... thank you for stepping by.

I love Portuguese churches! (But I guess I love everything about Portugal! :D) They are so rich in details that one can be staring at every one of them for so long and find so many different things that it's difficult not to feel blessed with that much beauty! Thanks for sharing :) Resteemed!

How amazing , beautiful shots.

I've visited many church even I am not a believer as well. I agree with you that ceiling painting is not common.. is unique. I've not been yet to Lisbon ...just found another reason to visit it !!

There are so many beautiful spots in Lisbon ... but here is a tip ... try to go off season .. early, early spring or late fall. Otherwise the city is unbearable, it's way too busy and much less enjoyable.

Thanks man for your tip!!
