Sustainable Development Goals #15: Restore ecosystems and preserve biodiversity

Sustainable Development Goals: Global goals for sustainable development.

An end to extreme poverty, inequality, injustice and climate change. That is the core of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 193 member states of the United Nations (UN) have adopted this development agenda for 2015-2030. The agenda consists of 17 goals. These SDGs are fully called the Sustainable Development Goals but are often abbreviated to SDGs. They apply in all countries and for all people.

The fifteenth goal: Protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of ecosystems, manage forests sustainably, combat desertification and land degradation and turn it back and call a halt to the loss of biodiversity.

Forests cover 30 percent of the land surface of the earth. Besides being important for food safety and sheltering, they are also essential for fighting climate change, protecting biodiversity and creating the habitat of indigenous peoples. We lose 13 million hectares of forest annually, while the land damage causes desertification of 3.6 billion hectares of land.

Deforestation

Deforestation and desertification - caused by man and climatic change - pose enormous challenges to sustainable development and affect the lives of millions of people in their fight against poverty. Action is taken to manage the forests and challenge desertification.

For example, deforestation must have stopped in 2020 and afforestation must increase worldwide. In the same year freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems must be protected, in particular forests, marshes, mountain areas and steppes. In 2030, desertification must be stopped.

Sustainability is SO important! Many people don't realize they can change very tiny things in their lives to shift towards a more sustainable way of life whether it's saving leftovers and eating them over the next few days, composting, learning about "Best By, Sell By" dates, turning off water when brushing teeth, "meatless Mondays", etc. If everyone made small changes, it'd make a huge difference. A bigger issue I would love to see change is in the Farm Bill towards better Ag practices and conservation efforts. What we do today is changing the ecosystem and biodiversity of animals and climates all over. Thanks for your important post!
