I have no objections to a 5.30am start to capture the dawn. Being up in time to see the sunrise means that even if conditions aren't entirely favourable at the beginning of the shoot, the coming daylight will give a chance to capture more images and the trip isn't wasted. If you start out just before sunset you either get your shots or go home in the dark with nothing.
Just recently I happened to be in the small town of Stamford at the right kind of time on the right kind of day and captured these three images over the space of an hour.

Sadly it clouded over for a good few hours after that so I had to pack up and go home, but it was amazing to witness such a dramatic change in the light in such a short space of time.
