Nope, u made a good decision in my eyes if you plan to hold onto it for a little bit longer.
STEEM is a Digital Currency. You can use it to purchase items from the Steem store for example, from various outlets who accept Steem and also contract your fellow Steemians to do work for you. Maybe you need a logo made or a song mixed etc.
Not to mention... if you power it up in your Steem Wallet, you can have some control over how much rewards are delegated on a post.
