I have been meditating on similar concept recently. I adhere to "The Power of Now." But as you stated, I use the now to centre my being because all change must come from within. And love of self is the greatest motivator of change. I also feel that we participate in creation when we bring order to chaos. We must let the chaos exist as the raw materials we will use to build the now in which we wish to live.
