In Spring each year this little tree flowers, with 'hanging beads' (long racemes) dribbling down with beautiful pink flowers (I believe some are red) The ones in my neck of the woods are pink powder puffs.

Latin name is always research on my part Barringtonia racemosa, (for those who love the real name) AKA: Powder-puff tree in English, poeierkwasboom in Afrikaans and iBhoqo in isiZulu

The pungent fragrance on damp soil when they fall and carpet the ground is quite overwhelming.

Now named an indigenous tree in 2013, protected from people cutting, damaging or destroying them. They grow along the east coast of South Africa being sub-tropical to tropical where they thrive. Found in mangroves and swampy areas, this tree is close to the Amanzimtoti river.

On the tree fresh they are quite pretty, once they fall to the ground and mix with the damp soil they have an overwhelming pungent smell @gillianpearce
