The Banded Caterpillar Parasite Wasp

in #macrophotography7 years ago (edited)

This wasp is one of the Ichneumondae. It's known as the Banded Caterpillar Parasite Wasp, Ichneumon promissorius. I found this one inside my house a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately I only got one photo of it before it flew off, never to be seen again.

The species is found in eastern parts of Australia. According to the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries website, the "female has a white band on the antennae; the male has orange and black antennae". They parasitise the pupal stage of certain moths (Helicoverpa spp. and some armyworms).

All of the photos were taken with a Canon 7D and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens.
