What is "making" anyway?
In my introduction I mentioned I have a large community of "makers", and outside of my day job and my family, that is where most of my energy is spent.
Many of you might not call yourself a maker, but a bet a whole bunch of you are :)
Makers are people who, well, make stuff.
They repair things.
Assemble things.
Paint, code, sculpt, weld, glue, solder, wire.
Laser, saw, CNC, melt, mould ...
Makers are awesome.
What do I make?
Being a programmer, I am massively into Arduino
And Raspberry Pi
I use those to make robots and quadcopters! (I also have a DJI Mavic Pro drone)
I have 14 3d printers (incomplete list here), two laser engravers, and a CNC, plus I teach the above at our local maker space :)
- Next for me is to learn welding, metal work, and improve my woodwork skills
Maker Manifesto
There are a few manifestos going around, I am sure you can find them.
What I agree with is
If you can't open/fix it, you don't own it.
It's not just about figuring it out, it's about sharing what you learned.
Makers make the world better :)
Let's bring the maker community together on Steem! Thanks for the post, I am now following. You can follow related content on my page.
Nice! Followed, looking forward to hearing about your projects!
Thanks! Following you back :)
I guess I fall into this category as I'm a mechanical engineer and machine designer for my primary job. I've gotten into a side job of flipping cars with a buddy of mine who's an auto mechanic and he works in a body shop. Below is a picture of the first wrecked car that we bought and fixed up to sell. Paid $600 and got replacement parts at a salvage yard and with registration, title, and parts I've got about $1300 in it and will probably sell it between $2k - 3k.
It's an Acura 3.2 TL.
We still need to paint it, replace the ugly muffler, and pull the front part of the frame forward so the hood will latch but we're close to finishing it and I love seeing the fruits of my labor. It'll be great to see the profit from it soon! Honestly I'll be happy with any profit as this is the first one and I plan to ramp up this business because I really enjoy it.
It's fulfilling adding value to things and fixing things. I also do a lot of home improvement and enjoy that too. If only there were more hours in the day and days in the week lol.
Following you now.
Awesome 👏
I'm mechanically stupid, I'd love to be able to do more with cars :)
Meh, very few ppl are mechanically inclined these days. I learned it by working in automation for 8 years fighting with unruly machinery. I went to college but they don't really teach practical life skills there lol.
Yeah it does seem to be one of those things you have to learn by doing :D
