The aquarium
The Malta National Aquarium is situated on Qawra’s coastline, near the popular tourist town of Bugibba. A public aquarium, the complex, whose structure is in the form of a starfish, is spread over 20,000 square metres and features 41 tanks that house various species of fish as well as amphibians, reptiles, and insects.

Marine life of the Aquarium
The Aquarium’s main tank is dedicated to marine life from the Indian Ocean, here visitors will encounter exotic species such as blacktip reef sharks, zebra sharks, rays, eels, and batfish amongst many others, as they swim through the coral shipwreck. Visitors of all ages will enjoy passing under the tunnel walk-through, where sharks and rays swim around and above you. In the zone 1 and 2 tanks that replicate Malta’s underwater environment you can discover Mediterranean marine life and fish commonly found around the Maltese shores.The National Aquarium is not only a tourist attraction but also a research and conservation site that focuses on Mediterranean endangered marine species found in Maltese waters. Educational programmes increase knowledge about the natural habitat of sea creatures and its preservation.
