The whole project was launched on December 24th 1996. As the work of the Italian developer Nicole Salmoria so that today hundreds voluntarily work on (as developers, donors of ROMs, testers...) and are constantly improving him.
The basic version of MAME has for many years been written for DOS ,but because it's an open source code dozens of ports appeared for a variety of operating systems and even consoles and portable devices. One of the best is certainly MAME UIFX32, made for Windows, which we recommend .
Today MAME supports nearly nine thousand games and their reviews and hacks in the period from the late seventies to titles minimum 4 years old.
In the beginning the team focused on games which are based on sprites, but now equal attention is paid to polygonal achievements that began to emerge in the early nineties. Hardware requirements vary widely depending on the technical characteristics of the game itself, so that for titles of the early eighties sufficient any Pentium processor with at least 32 MB of RAM is sufficient, but generally, for most of them you'll need a Pentium III and at least 256 MB of system memory .
However, many recent works ( California Speed, Hyperdrive ...) require multi-core processors clocked exceeding 4GHz to work normally. If you don't have an really old computer or you don't need some specific settings, you can use MAME freely for CPS emulation, meaning Neo Geo games which, in the past functioned much better in special emulators Kawaks or Nebula. Still, to start MODEL 2 games the MODEL 2 emulator remains irreplaceable.
MAME also emulates following arcade systems:
– Arkanoid
– Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara
– The King of Fighters ’98 – The Slugfest
– Mortal Kombat II
– NBA Jam Tournament Edition
– Out Run
– Pac-Man
– Street Fighter Alpha 3
– Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
– Tekken 3
