After failing to add to his squad as he would have liked, Jose Mourinho got his Premier League campaign off a to a decent start when his side overcame Leicester City.
But defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion in their second game have got the alarm bells ringing again at Old Trafford.
One of Mourinho's biggest issues at Man United is getting the best out of Paul Pogba.
As Man United's star player, the club needs him to be at his best in order to achieve success on multiple fronts.
Mourinho has even given him the captain's armband for the start of the season in a desperate attempt to get the best out of him, but the Frenchman looked uninterested against Brighton.
Many have blamed Mourinho for his failure to get Pogba to perform at a high level on a consistent basis.
Man United legend Wayne Rooney has now had his say, and he believes that it's up to Pogba to prove himself that he belongs at the club.
“Paul is a fantastic player and he has to do it for himself I think," he told CNN World Sport, per the Sun.
Paul Pogba scored a late penalty against Brighton but Man United still lost 3-23
“You hear a lot of people saying Jose Mourinho needs to get the best out of him, but for Paul he needs to do it for himself and prove he’s at that level to help Man United.
“If they’re going to win the title, he’ll be the main player in terms of them doing that, I’m sure.”
Rooney then referred to the media attention that Pogba has been receiving, but noted that the Frenchman will know how to deal with it.
“Obviously, surrounding him is a lot of publicity," he added.
Mourinho and Pogba are said to have a rocky relationship at present
“He’s in the public eye and I’m sure he knows how to deal with that, but he’s one of the best players.
“If Jose can get the best out of Paul this season, that will be a huge plus for Man United and a step in the right direction in winning the title.”
Well said, Wayne. Pogba's is paramount to Man United's success this season.
It's up to him to shoulder the blame if he does not perform at the level expected of him.
But if he does play to the best of his ability on a consistent basis, Man United will be well within reach of winning silverware this season.
