Manga has had several influences on the larger world, being read and enjoyed by many countries and continents around the world such as Europe, throughout Asia, North and South America. In this way Japan has been able to achieve the “Soft Power” of diplomatic results through the exportation of their cultural products. The popularity of Manga throughout the world has had a big influence on pop-culture bringing about manga inspired works in other countries which have addressed their own culturally specific issues in the Manga style. Manga affects the world through providing graphic illustrations to accompany complex and thought provoking issues about social justice, race, gender, and often serves as a satire addressing controversial issues in an indirect and entertaining way. It pushes the imagination in the realms of fantasy and dictates trends that are followed in the western world. It also brings alive the kid inside of every adult by blending the enjoyment of cartoons with sexual overtones and the action packed excitement of confrontation and heroic violence. Manga is a form of art that has its own unique visual structure often being read from left to right and utilizing panels, speech balloons, and text boxes. It also affects the greater world through making reading more fun for kids and adults of all ages who are able to enjoy the engaging stores and wonderful illustrations. Although manga and anime are not the same thing some Manga has served as inspiration for a lot of successful anime and even video games. Children everywhere are growing up with the illustrations of Manga and Japanese animation influencing their own artistic style and many kids today when asked to draw will often display a unique blended style that incorporates many of the cute and expressive styles seen in Manga illustrations. The influence of Manga on the larger world reminds me of the quote “the pen is mightier than the sword” and this continues to shine through in Manga’s influence on popular culture throughout the world.
