Market Friday does Habitat For Humanity

in #marketfriday7 years ago (edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!)

I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. Every week, I look forward to seeing what you will send me and I am always happy to see so many from all over the world.

My shout out today is for Habitat for Humanity and all of its volunteers. My family and I have been involved with them since 2000. From serving lunches to the workers to building fences, swinging a hammer and doing a build.

Nothing is beneath any of these workers. Holding hands, we shall complete it together. It always makes me feel good when I walk away. Every person I have ever worked with cared and loved what they were doing. I love their spirit. I love their joy. I love the volunteers. Truly. Truly.

It is and has been, hands down one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.

For more information on Habitat for Humanity, click Here

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that provides safe and affordable housing to those who can't afford it. They work in the United States and around the world. ... The houses built by Habitat are simple and affordable. New hope is given to low-income families by the housing they are able to move into.

Habitat works toward our vision by building strength, stability, and self-reliance in partnership with families in need of decent and affordable housing. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Information gathered on Google.

Who doesn't love to see what they will be selling in some foreign market, shopping in places I have never been to and some, never even heard of. There is always a curiosity attached to foreign ingredients, different produce or any product sold. So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery, art galleries, wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

So, this week, I went shopping at the Habitat Restore, which is Habitat for Humanity's Thrift Shop that they run and the funds are used to help with their mission. Come on in with me and see what we might find.

Habitat.jpg

This is my local Habitat for Humanity or ReStore as it is known. It is one of my go-to places to donate and many times, it will be the first place I check for building supplies. Builders have a habit of donating their brand new unused supplies to them. Come on, let's check it out!

20180515_161337.jpg

The first item that catches my eye is this platform bed. Oh, what a great bargain! Bookcases and two sets of dresser drawers and even a set of drawers on the stairs.

I want it.

20180515_170828.jpg

They probably had about thirty couches today. Most of them were pretty pristine. I would have to say that a fair amount of them were not very old, but, there will always be a vintage piece or two mixed in. A few antiques for good measure.

I would have to say that there is a little bit of something for everyone.

I just spotted some chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Oh, now I see a whole lighting seciton.

20180515_170956.jpg

Stoves, refrigerators, microwaves... Oh, my! I could redo my kitchen with this stuff. They put new things out every day, so if you don't see it today, check back tomorrow. Eventually, they will get it in! I can almost, almost promise you!

20180515_172015.jpg

The dining room set was complete and was in awesome shape. Dozens of different styles and various budgets.

So far, so good. I am pretty happy with what I am seeing.

aaa.jpg

This is where they excel in this store. This is the way they started, with building supplies and just look! All brand spanking new. Builders donate all day long. Bless them.

They have enough to open up their own "Lowe's" store.

20180515_171257.jpg

Score! This is really a nice piece in my humble opinion! Nicely put together and has all the matching pieces.

Even well priced. You just cannot beat that with a stick!

20180515_171358.jpg

Need a doorknob?

33336024_10156403077928832_3083430757796937728_n.jpg

Grandfather clocks... who knew you could find them here?

33370045_10156403078498832_1896129066482794496_n.jpg

Carpets. I like the way they have tried to display everything so nice.

So, that is the Habitat Store. I had a good time shopping here and I hope you did too! Until next week!!!
#Happy Market Friday!!

According to Habitat's site:

When cleaning, remodeling or moving, you often run into household items you no longer use, but that are still in great condition. Whether it be items like the windows you just replaced or an old TV, you may wonder, “Should I donate this?”

While you may not be able to donate certain items like mattresses, Habitat Restores generally accept a variety of items. For instance, used household items and home goods from kitchenware to cabinets are just a few of the types of donations you can offer a Habitat ReStore.

Most gently used items can either be donated, recycled or repurposed.

Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus. As for Louis, he had the right idea.

What a wonderful world.
What a wonderful life.

Sort:

I recall getting involved with some habitat for humanity project back in the secondary school when I used to work with some construction firms.

They help build many houses which were at very affordable prices which made people rush for them. People actually bought them before the buildings were actually completed.

Yesterday I visited Some yam sellers. Sharing with the whole world on the hottest post every friday.

Oh I finally got it done!!! Thanks for being a great host!

Hi @old-guy-photos! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

They have some really nice pieces in there! It looks clean and all the items are presentable. Seeing that cherry dining set sure brought back memories of my mom's! Of course that is a great song with a great message. I really appreciate the message and inspiration you give in your posts

Thank you! I like the fact that everything is something that you may want to put in your house, no trash here. Oh, yes... there were some memory pieces for me as well.

I love this song. Louis really knew his stuff. :)

ding! the search came back positive! Thanks for the information! @dswigle I knew about Habitat for Humanity from media but not the ReStores. Because of your interesting Market Friday post, I had to look up to see if/where there was a Habitat for Humanity ReStore location in my area and

Here's the searchable URL for others to use: https://www.habitat.org/restores#

Have a super weekend, Denise!

Thanks, Nina! I am glad you found one near you!

I actually posted two searchable links in the post. All links lead back to the same place. ;)

tip!

I know! We all want that platform bed! I think I would even sleep in it. :)

I am so glad that you will be looking it up! I know for a fact that there is a ReStore here: 1785 Stratford Ave, Stratford, CT 06615 and some in Bridgeport (that is supposed to be a good one and several other places.

After you retire, I can see you volunteering with them! Thanks for dropping the link!

Tip!

I would happily volunteer for a place like that I am sure if we move to MA they have them there as well

and yes I would happily have a bed like that

I know they have one in Buzzards Bay and Yarmoth... I am sure there are more by now.

The buids are not all the time, but, the one here in Washington, DC has build year round.

They are nationwide and actually worldwide now. I am happy and proud to work with a place like this.

Hi @tattoodjay! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

A HFH store opened recently about 45 minutes from us and I swear one day I will go there. I've heard these stores have some great items for real good prices!

Habitat has some really good stores especially for building supplies. They have more recently gotten into furniture and branched out. Check out one of those links because it gives all the locations of where their stores are.

Thanks for checking out Market Friday!

What a nice initiative! If I were in the US I would be volunteering here, that's for sure!

It is definitely one of the places that is near and dear to my heart. The Crews are always amazing to work with and the people that are receiving the home are always gracious and humble.

A most worthy Adventure.

Thank you so much Denise for your kindness!

Hi @pixresteemer! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

Cool post Denise! I never knew they had stores like that. My husband and father-in-law have helped to build houses for Habitat For Humanity years ago! I got to see one of the houses they built and it was pretty nice!!

There is one close to you I am almost positive. So many good people have been involved with this humanitarian effort.

That was awesome that you got to see the fruits of their labors!

Tip!

Thank you so much Denise!! I just looked it up and there is one very very close to me and I never even knew..lol! My husband volunteered as a teen working on and building houses and really learned a lot. That experience has really come in handy at times. ;)

The builds are great! I still love swinging a hammer! :)

The experience is awesome! Glad you found it! Now you should visit it and tell me if it is a good one! :)

Looks like only a ten minute ride so will definitely do that! ;)

You have a really awesome ReStore. It looks like a brand new furniture store. I love them. We have a pretty good one with really nice furniture and other building materials. It's my go to place as we remodel our house.

Exactly!! I love that place! The best part, of course, is that we are helping them as they are helping us. It's the building materials that I really love!

Thank you for the visit! I always love it!

Hi @marxrab! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

How great that you have this organization helping people in need in your place, how I wish we have like this in the Philippines since poverty is one of our country's big problem, by the way I love your photo of the grandfather clock I've never seen one in person...hope will find one soon if it does exist in our place, lol... Hope you'll also like my entry for today's #marketfriday...

https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@bellekiss-31/market-friday-visits-beauty-shop

It is a most wonderful organization that I have had the pleasure of being involved with. I hate to see poverty and I wish there was more than I could do to wipe it out.

I love grandfather clocks too!!

I found a site for habitat in the Philippines: Check them out!!

https://www.habitat.org/where-we-build/philippines

Tip!

Followed the link and it's good to know that we have it also in the Philippines, but maybe the reason why I never heard about it because it's very far from my place, what I heard that we had here in Cebu Philippines is the Gawad Kalinga, but you know sometimes people who really deserves the help were not given chance of availing it...Thanks much for the info!

It is nice to see people donating things they no longer need and it is nice to see most donate things they would use in their own house and not stuff that should go in the trash!

Thank you for your words. You left the nicest comment. Thanks again!

Habitat rings a bell to me. I guess it is the same NGO who helped us when Typhoon Haiyan struck. I know it's a US-based organization, but it's nice to know that you are near them. Small world. 😊

I sooooo love the platform bed. It would be great in my little man's room!!! Ah! It's so perfect!

Thank you for giving us a tour in Habitat for Humanity. It's touching to know that there are a lot who wants to help, especially that we were a recipient of it! 💕💕

By the way, here's my entry:
https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@gingbabida/market-friday-goes-to-wet-market

My mother-in-law got involved with Habitat when it was brand new, it is an amazing concept that needs to be broadened. We used to do "barn raising" and make sure every newlywed couple had a home, can you imagine the prosperity if we just offered that now? We do not have to offer McMansions, but a little hut to call your own is a huge hand up in life. Thanks for calling attention to the awesome work HforH does! I still need to talk about the quality of your photos. It's excellent. Habitat for Humanity, obviously I didn't know until now ... obviously, it is a necessary, useful activity and represents a special face of the US people. Caring for the poor! I would really like to visit and buy from a Habitat Restore. There is definitely a lot to buy!
My market is normal: https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@bluemoon/the-underground-market

What a wonderful cause to volunteer for @dswigle I love the name 'Habitat for Humanity.' We have similar programs here and that wouldn't be possible without the willing help of amazing volunteers like yourself Denise. Most of those products look to be in very good condition. A somewhat unusual and very interesting #marketfriday post, Denise! I loved the charitable aspect of it. To my shame, I didn’t even know that Habitat for Humanity operated second-hand stores. We don’t have them in Sweden, although we do have some other great organisation who employ this concept.

Hello beautiful, I always like those markets, apart from being for a good cause, there are always very interesting things.
I did not have time for the market, so I just put pictures.
But photos of shoes I hope you like it
Happy lovely Saturday

I had heard of Habitat's stores but didn't realize they were so big! There were no locations up where I lived before but I see a couple here in the L.A. area. My son will be setting up a new apartment soon...seems like this would be an excellent place to shop/support. Thanks for giving us such a thorough look at what's available.

Wow! Seems you've found treasure... :D What a wide range of items they carry and as you said, everything looks good and proper... I would love to browse through this place... Happy Weekend, Denise!! :))

I grew up with a mother who loved to thrift, and some of my best memories are of shopping these stores with her. Also, some of my coolest childhood treasures were found in thrift shops.

ReStores are somewhat new to me, however. There were none where I grew up. But, there's a great one just down the road from me and it's been such a boon for doing home repairs and upgrades. It's also, by its nature, somewhat different from other thrift shops, so there's the whole variety factor. Thanks for the interior photos, too, it's kind of fun to see how different, yet similar, that location is from mine.

Grandfather clocks... who knew you could find them here?

We have one in ours too!

What a wonderful idea for a post series, definitely following.
