After I have taken you to the Christmas Market in my hometown Karlsruhe on last week's #marketfriday, today's #marketfriday initiated by @dswigle will be exotic again: I will show you around the Indigenous market of Otavalo, Ecuador.

Otavalos, Indigenous Ecuadorians, make up a big part of the population in the Otavalo region. They are known all over Ecuador for their handcrafts and textiles. Every Saturday, tourists as well as locals flock into the small town to visit the giant market.
Apart from a rather touristy section where souvenirs and indigenous textiles are sold, there are many other parts of the market where living as well as roasted animals, groceries and even drug store items are sold. As a guy in Bolivia once told me: “We don't have supermarkets here, we have markets where you can get anything you need!”

Otavalo and Around
The market is not the only place to see in Otavalo. In fact, the Andean nature sourrounding the city is really worth a visit. From Otavalo, I did a hike to this sacred tree.

These were awesome shots of Ecuador! Those are truly super markets! No doubt about it!
The indigenous market held some many surprises, from the whole pig bring roasted to the endless rows of merchandise.

I think I like this market better than the European one; lucky you to be able to travel to such a lovely place. Are there many English speakers in Ecuador?
I think in Ecuador there are more English speakers than in some other Latin American countries, but still most people only speak Spanish. You will be able to get around without English only, but to get the real experience and be able to chat with every Ecuadorian you meed you need to speak some Spanish ;)

There is no fixed plan yet , but my friend is from Venezuela and therefore I have all the updates on current situation. Also met some other peeps who travel back and forth. It's dangerous but of course one need to stick to few rules in the cities and in theory should be fine ;)

what colors, there are probably lots of opportunities to photograph over there, the colors are stunning, I would spot such colorful patterns in buildings, clothing, streetscenes.

Lovely photos, I really love the view from around the globe on here. I really wish that we had more markets rather then supermarkets here, but at least we have a farmers and crafters market a couple times a month!

My Husband was born in Quito, but has lived in Texas most of his life. He wears the traditional Ecuadorian Pants around Houston all the time! He took me to his home country to meet his family in May 2014. It is beautiful there! And I got to visit Otavalo while I was there! A great reminder of a great place! Thank you for sharing!
