Today we take a trip around an incredible mall in Dubai for #marketfriday initiated by @dswigle named after the epic explorer and adventurer Ibn Battuta. We visited a lot of malls in Dubai in the five weeks that we were there.
The first thing that you notice is that the mall is divided into the many countries that Ibn Battuta visited on his travels.
Today we are in glorious India.
The whole place is just gorgeous, sumptuous and incredibly beautiful. With magnificent ceiling decorations and marble just about everywhere.
It is breathtaking. The scale of the mall is matched by it's lavish decorations.
This wider angle may give you some idea of the overall size of the space. It was a wonderful experience and especially for someone like me that is not that interested in shopping. There are plenty of things to give you pause to stop and wonder at it all.
Of course the reason we were there was to look for a dress for an upcoming wedding, so it was back to the search for the perfect dress.
These are just two of the countless formal gowns that we saw.
Needless to say I was busy taking photographs of the building. What is it with men and shopping?
So who was Ibn Battuta (February 25, 1304 – 1368)? Well he was a Moroccan scholar and an explorer and to give you an idea of his travels over 30 years of wandering. The parts of the map coloured in red below are the places he traveled too.
So how on earth did he find his way around back in the so call Dark Ages. Well they were very advanced in astronomy and they had several tools to figure out where they were at any time.
This is an astrolabe. Which is the precursor of the sextant and with it you could work out your latitude. Or how far north or south you are on earth by measuring the height of stars at different times of the day or night.
This is an armillary sphere. It is a celestial globe that you can adjust to show where you are on earth and even what day it is.
It was further developed by Islamic astronomers to show the pathways of the stars, sun and moon.
Can you see those little holes in the sphere? You look through them and line them up with a celestial body and you can calculate where you are very accurately.
I hope you have enjoyed this tour of the Ibn Battuta Mall and brief history lesson lol Next week. China

That looks like a grand mall Michael! Never fails to amuse me when I see a Bath and Body store there though lol. Those reminded me of the Antikythera mechanism.
The astrolabe is exactly that. When they found the Antikythera mechanism in that old shipwreck, they were astonished. Here you have a mechanical computer well over 2,000 years old. #mindblown
Well spotted Paul. Not just a hat-rack then lol
#mindblown like yesterday seeing those 2 SpaceX boosters come back down together and land standing upright, like a ballet! I was geeked out on it!
Truly an epic event. I watched it live and was blown away.
Then I watched it again today and the comments were still live.
It was so funny seeing the comments from the flat earthers vs the people with proof of brain.
I was cracking up.
Next stop Mars.
That's awesome :) I like the idea of a mall that not only has cultural produce, but which includes apsects of the culture that the produce was created by.
That's what impressed me about this mall too. They made a real effort to show their cultural roots/routes.
Very innovative and novel way to use the space.
It certainly is :)
Truly a out standing looking mall love the way this mall has been done with some great history added nice post :)
Thanks hangin, they have some of the most amazing malls in the world in Dubai. Great photo ops.
I can images it has the best architectural designs in the world i reckon. I have done a couple @marketfriday malls in Thailand which are pretty spectacular also. Check out my @marketfriday i did for this Friday on a exclusive gourmet mall about fruits.
This post reminds me again of my lucky past. ;)Truly Dubai has a lot of beautiful malls. ;)
It sure does and you can spend days in them and still not see everything. This mall is very special in that it celebrates a great explorer and it is themed so nicely. That elephant is just enormous.
It's been years since I have been there but still the paints still looks new and it is always clean. Before there was a giant old styled ship there for display I don't know if it was still there when you came?
It's still there and I photographed it. Going to use it for next weeks marketfriday on China.
Oh i see. I get it now. This week is for Indian theme. I see I see. I wish that my SD card hadn't malfunction so I can share too few of my pictures. I will try to see if I save it somewhere.
Glad you picked up on the Indian theme. Look forward to your photos if you can find them.

They really know how to entertain you when you visit these Dubai malls. Stunning.
The scenery is exceptional. Your photography is world class. Exquisite architecture. Boy I'm entertained just by the photos. Then there's the armillary sphere, wow. I don't think I would do any shopping, be too busy looking at the sites, objects and buildings.
Me too, I spent the whole time just taking photos. A truly spectacular place.
