Introduction
The tradition of marriage is the most interesting thing to discuss, because marriage is one of a very unique culture. The uniqueness is because between one country with other countries have differences, each has advantages. Even where I am, in Aceh. Between one place and another is characteristic of its own.
In this post, I do not discuss about every detail of traditional customs and marriage traditions in Aceh, because in general the tradition of marriage in Aceh is almost the same. The discussion this time about the bridal delivery that is specific in north Aceh, is not elsewhere. The bridal delivery in question is, every groom is obliged to bring a coconut that has grown or sprouted into the bride's house.
Discussion
The coconut grows or sprouts
Coconut (Cocos nucifera) that has grown or sprouted (Acehnese language, U Timoh) is one of the mandatory delivery of the groom to the bride. The selected coconut usually has two leaves.
U Timoh will be decorated as beautifully as possible. The decorator is the unmarried youth, they will create according to the circumstances, for example the groom's job is a fisherman, then the grown coconut will be decorated into a boat shape. Decorating coconuts is usually done at night, and the next day the growing coconut will be brought to the bride's house.
There is a philosophical meaning in the coconut tree held by the people of Aceh, as a symbol that today is the starting point of building the family ark and is expected to grow like a coconut tree, where every part has benefits and no one is in vain.
H.M. Zainuddin in the book Tarich Atjeh And Nusantara (1961:351) mentions that the coconut should be planted, the groom who dug a hole and the bride who planted it.
Benefits of coconut tree
Very many benefits of coconut trees, below are some of the benefits of the coconut tree that I remember.
• Roots; Useful as dye, toothbrush as well, and used as a traditional medicine (mouthwash, diarrhea medicine, and dysentery)
• Trunk; building materials and bridges
• Leaves; Roof building, wicker and ceremonial decoration
• Bone leaves; Broomsticks and craft basic materials
• Flower bunches/palm flowers; wedding ceremony
• Coconut water (from the flower stalk); fermented drinks, vinegar and brown sugar
• Coconut fiber; fuel, woven straps, footwear, orchid flower pots, and other uses
• Coconut shell; charcoal and raw materials for handicrafts and household appliances
• Water and young coconut meat; Water coconut can be used as a fresh drink
• Old coconut meat; coconut milk, cooking oil, copra, raw materials for hair and body care products
• Coconut umbut can be a delicious vegetable.
Concluding
It is amazing from coconut trees, from the roots to the tops of the leaves that provide the most benefits for humans. Looking at the philosophy and the principle of the benefits of this coconut tree, so that people can learn and interpret this life like a coconut tree. Does not cause damage even to protect the environment from damage.
The coconut tree is a symbol of a strong, and rich soul. Not afraid to aspire even though the wind blows hard. Powerful not to oppress others but to nurture the small trees around them. Rich but not miserable because what he has all can provide positive benefits.
May all philosophical meanings contained from the coconut tree can be practiced in the life of the household.
