But for self defense you NEVER should put down your guards (hands), but have them always up! It might be efficient for the kicks to do a counter-movement with the arm, but I guess it is not recommended in a real fight situation.

Cheers mate, but the answer is that it always depends on the situation, blanket advice of "always do this 100% of the time" does not exist in martial arts.
I've unfortunately had too many street fights and I've had a decent career so far in combat sports. So I disagree.
Only a beginner should have their hands up 100% of the time because they are still learning timing, distancing, counters. And then "keep your hands up" only covers part of your body you cannot defend everywhere 100% of the time.
Dropping your hands can invite attacks which you are ready to counter. I don't think it's that simple as keep your hands up.

Of course, if you are experienced and have the flexibility, then it is OK. I just meant that Newbies should not kind of automatize hands going down in kicks. They should be aware of the downsides.
