My pet theory is that basic arithmetic is like walking and calculators are like driving cars. In days of yore nobody had cars so they were great at walking. Now, cars and calculators are everywhere. But, for simple arithmetic problems, it's like driving to your neighbour's house. It takes much longer than just walking but people have become terrible walkers.

Interesting theory. Problem is this question is also that a calculator cannot help you.

Its like you can only drive a car but the road is too narrow to drive one.

We are getting into philosophy here :-)
