Imagine if everyone were to behave as you are doing. Then the network would have so little competitive edge vs other cryptocurrencies. It's the fact that the Steem Network can pay for its own growth that makes Steem valuable and competitive. Metcalfe's Law determines the value of a network, which grows exponentially with new users. Who would want to join the Steem network if everyone was doing as you are? You have so much more to gain by promoting the health and growth of the network with pro-social voting instead of selfish voting.
Metcalfe's Law also determines that uncompetitive networks will die (it is a consequence of it that social and financial networks are winner-take-all markets).
