12th March 1968 - After some long years of fight/discussion/negotiation, Mauritius finally became independent from the United Kingdom!
Today marks the 50th anniversary of being an independent country! Happy independence day my beautiful country!
I am not here today to write the history of my country, but just want to share with the world about this great moment we are living on this small island found in the middle of the Indian Ocean!
So many of us still don't seem to understand how lucky we are to be an independent country...well guys just look around you and you will understand better!
I would like to thank all those who have worked hard and fight for all of us to get this independence from the UK! Those were the real heroes!
I've found a very nice post while browsing today from a hotel chain in Mauritius and if you wish to know more on my country and its history, please do check it out! It contains all info from when the country was discovered till we got the status of a Republic in 1992!
History of Mauritius from Sun Resorts
What I learned from the history of my country is that it was first discovered by the Arabs during the 15th century, but only started to be inhabited by the Dutch settlers in the 16th century!
We also had the Portuguese who came to Mauritius during those times, but were not so much interested in such a small island!!!
Among other countries who played important roles in the development of Mauritius are ; the French and the British!
With centuries of immigration from different countries happening on the island, this created diverse cultures and traditions which actually makes the beauty of Mauritius!
The population of Mauritius consist of nearly all different religions of the world...from Hindus to Muslims, Chinese to Catholics, Atheist, Buddhism, etc.... it's what we call as the melting pot of cultures!
We all live peacefully together, and life is really beautiful over here!
I hope you guys get the chance to travel over here and discover this amazing country one day!
I wish my country and all Mauritians a very Happy Independence Day again!
It's time to celebrate!
Thank you!
