How maximization attempts hurt others

in #maxi15 days ago

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that someone out there decided to take my hint from a recent post and follow through with cutting in to earn higher curation returns at the cost of another project.

This is what I wrote in a post of mine a few days ago:

Lo and behold, they appeared:

We've seen this happen before, for many years the @steemmonsters account was earning between 3-4% APR on curation that should be around 8.5% because another account was voting on posts it'd most likely vote on before them and Splinterlands was not in a rush to vote them before the 24h limit so they'd quite literally give them a big portion of their own curation rewards because of the rules of curation currently. With a size as big as steemmonsters this meant roughly 500 hive per week which isn't a small number.

With @poshtoken, I was personally okay if it earned some more curation rewards since it's a nonprofit project and small enough to not take too much rewards from @ocdb voting late, but now that cannot occur anymore since there's about 12 other accounts casting their vote in early waiting for that last ocdb vote to give them higher curation return APR while they do nothing but autovote all the redditposh comments.

More votes is good, right?

Well not in this case, we have manual curators making sure the redditposh comments don't get overrewarded because if the share barely got any upvotes or comments on reddit it most likely means it brought in no traffic to hive. We're not assholes who zero out some smaller rewards for trying and sharing but shares on your general subreddits already full of hivers don't really deserve $0.50-$1 in rewards, at least not at this price of Hive.

Another thing this causes is that if all the shares are getting rewarded, it'll incentivize spammers and farmers to start using redditposh which not only lowers the reputation of posh but also may affect hive links on reddit if admins notice the spam.

Now to try and prevent all this we have to start curating the shares both up and down to try and discourage these autovoters so their returns come out lower than voting on literally anything else. This means compared to the extra room we had in the past we have to get to these comments before the 24h mark with both posh and ocdb so they're not encouraged with extra curation returns while at the same time downvoting many of the other comments that get overrewarded. Basically a lot more work for us.

tl;dr, shut up about opportunities to maximize rewards in the future.

sending part of the author rewards to @poshtoken.

Another thing that should be done, in my opinion, is that posts that were benefited by payments and deleted by Reddit should be returned to the poshtoken. For the sake of transparency and seriousness.

It's sad because the purpose of this initiative was beautiful and healthy. But whenever there is financial return, the cheating begins.

I suppose it kind of depends when they get deleted, if they were still around for a while and brought some traffic onto here there's nothing wrong to earn some rewards for that.

Ah okay, I just recently started reading up on POSH and sharing Hive articles on Reddit. I then wondered which accounts were upvoting POSH's comments. And a little while later I saw the downvotes from your account and a few others on those comments and was a little confused. But now I understand.

Is that why there are currently no Hive payouts when you share Hive articles on Reddit and the POSH comment under the post has been upvoted altogether?

That's a separate issue actually, we're just low on liquids on the @nomnomnomnom liquidation account. next powerdown is due soon so hope it manages to catch up on some of the payments!

I understand, thanks for the information.

Looks like it is still going on.

Looks like more work for posh curators

Where is this data from. I like to independently verify it

From Hivestats. Upvoting on mostly contest entries of Splinterlands to get better curation since, @steemmonsters rarely curate within 24 hours.

https://hivestats.io/@steemmonsters

Notice the voting time, in the last hour of the first day.

https://hivestats.io/@bdvoter

and not only bdvoter, a while back I saw a few users renting HP to take advantage of that. don't know how it is now.
you could rent hp for 9% and take 12.5% in curation.

Yeah, I remember someone who was doing exactly this

BTW these Bdvoter percentages are much lower than in the past, I remember them in the 300%+ range, sometimes up to almost 500%

That's a real shame, I thought they had come up with a system to prevent that...

cc @azircon

It has been. Most curators vote within 24 hrs window. Don't know what else to do. Any suggestions are welcome

According to hivestats there are a lot of posts getting voted very late:

Thus it's costing those 3 accounts, @steemmonsters, @sps.dao and @yabapmatt a lot of curation rewards.

I don't know the curation system of splinterlands, but it makes very little sense to vote posts up this late when most of the attention is gone after the first 24h.

I will consult again with the curators. They are aware of this problem. Trouble is due to contests it is often hard to vote within 24 hrs window. That said there should be no reason to vote on day 5

The main party taking advantage of this is getting over 30% more curation rewards than anyone else.

I can fix this.

Awesome, just trying to look out for ya'll returns, I'm sure SPL could do some good things with the extra value. I don't vote splinterlands posts often aside from some authors I follow and find on my feed so it doesn't really affect me personally, but it doesn't make much sense to forfeit so much curation rewards to others.

Voting early with DAO and Steammonsters also helps the good Splinterlands posts to show up in the trending posts... which brings more attention to them. I try to upvote the posts I like as fast as I can but my upvote is still tiny :)

I am aware of this. We had this discussion in the past and changes were implemented. I will have a discussion again

That is unfortunate that you have to do more work after you shared a way to earn more Hive via OCDB by trailing hiveposh...

They're both manual actually, not trailed, ocdb only trails ocd which are also manual. :D

It's just that now I'm going to have to vote for reddit shares daily instead of trying to catch up every 2-3 days.

You just remind me that even after 8 years, I'm still not entirely sure how curation actually works. I just vote on people I like, try to do it within 24 hrs, and hope for decent curation rewards in 7 days. No idea how to game that further to get a higher curation %.

Yeah, we had already a brief discussion on this, what a shame people instantly took the idea and started doing this... Same situation with zaku on splinterlands posts, I don't know if they even fixed it

So they're stealing time as well as rewards.

hmm a smart move but yours is smarter requires more work and effort and more monitoring but if thats the only way then shoot.

How soon we should vote to earn better curation ?

Within 24h of a post.

So from 1 minute to 24 hrs it remains same ? I thought, whoever votes first gets more ?

Yes from 1 min - 24h is the same.

I thought, whoever votes first gets more

^ That was the old system, like years back. We have had linear curation for such a long time now that I can't remember how long xD

Quite pathetic
Would only be creating more work for the curators
Keep up the good work with your team

This kind of behavior always chases away the people actually trying.
Thanks for keeping things fair even when it means more work.
