Fighter Analysis
McGregor has better fighter measurables than Mayweather, and has overall better power and has more "heart" and the intangibles, or in other words, the qualities you can't really measure. Will that be enough to lift McGregor over the top? Personally, I don't think so, although I am in fact rooting for McGregor to somehow pull off this upset. Mayweather has overall better speed, defense, and much better technique as compared to the rookie McGregor. It's no surprise why Mayweather is the heavy favorite in this matchup.
Who's the referee?
Veteran referee Robert Byrd will be reffing this fight. He is a ref that is well known for letting more grabbing and "wrestling" happen in the ring more than the other veteran refs would, so it may been seen as slightly suitable for McGregor in that regard, however, Byrd has generally been a ref with hardly any criticisms or controversial moments. He has a good reputation in the boxing community, and was a good choice to be ref in this fight.
Gloves
The Nevada State Athletic Commission surprisingly broke it's own rule, and allowed there to be use of the 8 oz. gloves, as McGregor and Mayweather had requested. Usually 8 oz. gloves are reserved for fighters in a lower weight class, however, they allowed this one exception for the fight, as it is a very high profile fight and will be better received by the public if the fighters used lighter weighted gloves. This decision will surely help out McGregor with his powerful punches, however Mayweather is also well accustomed to using 8 oz. gloves as well, and shouldn't really be a major factor going forward in this fight, as this is to the advantage of both fighters, as they are both extremely confident that they can knock their opponent out.
So can McGregor pull this off? It's certainly possible. When you combine his unorthodox fighting style, with his undeniable passion and intangibles, along with all the pressure there is on Floyd Mayweather to not get upset, anything is certainly possible. All it takes is one good lick on the chin to finish Floyd, but as Floyd is a marquee defensive fighter, it would be an incredible sighting to see something like that transpire.
