Stopped by an exhibit at the Morgan Library that closes this weekend of Monsters and Beasts in Medieval art.
Some of my favorites were various depictions of the (literal) mouth of hell.
Of course there were some of the usual suspects, like St. George slaying the dragon.
The preservation of colors in some of these texts is amazing, not to mention all of the terrible ways to die.
So is the intricate detail, here showing Adam and Eve's expulsion of the garden.
Though I do enjoy the more restrained pictures as well, especially the weirdly stylized gestures and postures. If I were the guy in red I think I'd be a bit more upset about a dragon nibbling on my foot.
But here was still plenty of gold and bright colors, here showing some notable exorcisms.
And a fabulously creepy page, once you notice the dark buried body.
