Memoir

/ˈmemˌwär/ noun. a record of events written by a person having intimate knowledge of them and based on personal observation. Usually memoirs. an account of one's personal life and experiences; autobiography. the published record of the proceedings of a group or organization, as of a learned society.

The prompt for week 33 is more about the picture than the words. So many people have become good photographers since mobile phones have become ever present. Sometimes we take a photo that strikes a perfect balance and stands out from the rest of the pictures on your camera roll. The particulars are hard to describe but sometimes we're in the right place at the right time and we capture something that's really special.

Memoir Monday has grown so much that I won’t be able to comment on everyone’s posts anymore (and get my own work done) but I’ll still be supporting your posts with reblogs, votes, and shares on my other social media accounts (X, Facebook, etc.).

For all of those who’ve regularly participated in Memoir Monday - keep going, you’re making great progress in chronicling your very own life story for future generations to enjoy.

For those who missed the inaugural post explaining what the Memoir Monday initiative is all about you can find it here.

Now for next week’s Memoir Monday prompt:

What is one of the best photographs you’ve ever taken?

My answer:

A little backstory, I was walking our beagle, Amstel, down Selby avenue in our Cathedral Hill neighborhood on an autumn morning in 2022.

As tends to happen this time of the year in the Twin Cities, there can be a drastic difference between evening and daytime temperatures.

I looked up and saw the thick fog shrouding the Victorian buildings along the avenue. The morning sun was struggling to shine through the mist and there was something mystical about it.

There wasn’t any thought behind framing the picture. As I was walking the dog I just slid my phone out of my back pocket and snapped the photo. I consider this the best photograph I’ve ever taken.

As we're preparing to move out of this neighborhood in the next few weeks this photo has extra significance. It will be a nice reminder of this chapter of our lives.

Rules of Engagement

  1. Please reblog this first post and share on other social platforms so we cast the widest net possible for this initiative;
  2. Pictures paint a thousand words. Include pictures in your posts if you have them;
  3. Answer each Memoir Monday prompt question in your own post. If possible, the prompt question will be published in the week prior so you'll have the entire week to answer and publish your own post;
  4. Have fun with it, don't worry about getting behind, or jumping into the project at any point after we've begun; and
  5. Lastly, be sure to include the tag #memoirmonday.

It's that simple.

At the end of the next twelve months we'll have created something immensely valuable together. It's so important to know our "whys" in life and there's no better way to do that than this.

Someday all that will be left of our existence are memories of us, our deeds, and words. It's up to you to leave as rich of a heritage as possible for future generations to learn from. So, go ahead, tell your stories. I can't wait to read them.

Be well and make the most of this day. I want to sincerely thank all of the participants thus far. I've really enjoyed reading your posts!

Incredible image! It is really good. Megusta the color and how you see the buildings through the haze, looks like an old photograph. It takes on more importance for you this image because of the move. A little piece of memory of this place.
I can imagine all the hustle and bustle of moving, but I hope you have a peaceful, relaxing Sunday afternoon with your loved ones. A hug, my friend

Thank you Nancy! I could envision seeing horses and buggies or 1920's vehicles on the side of the road. Our move is going to be very drawn out. We're packing up now but our moving day isn't until 11/18. It feels like we're living in a storage unit right now. : ) We keep getting these little reminders from the universe that we made the right decision. I hope you have a good week!

Likewise, my friend. May it all be slight. Hugs

That is a pretty awesome photo. I don't know if I could pick just one of the ones I have taken over the past several years. I actually think if I had to pick just one I might have to go back to my old print photos. Then I would have to scan it in and all of that ;) Assuming I can even find one!

That's an incredible photo - wow. I'd have to have a real think or certainly a peruse. There's photos that are wonderful memories - but as for one that's as beautifully composed and atmospheric as this, I am doubtful...

Thank you! It was pure luck. The fog really elevated it.

That is a stunning photo Eric! If it weren't for the modern cars, this would make the perfect poster for a movie set in the early 20th century, gorgeous!
I am so way behind with #memoirmonday, life has been filled with so many irritations and sadness some of my friends have been going through, that I've just buried my nose in the kitchen, the one place where I can forget about all the troubles of the world. I hope you're more settled in your new home now, that's if you're back from the visit to your Mom? I also hope your wife is feeling a tad better!
Have a good week further Eric!

Thank you Lizelle! I'm sorry to hear about the irritations and sadness! I hope that difficult period elapses quickly! It's good to have an escape that allows us to forget about everything for a while.

It's been very difficult for me to crank blog posts out too with everything we have going on. That's one reason I chose this photo prompt for this week's Memoir Monday, it was less work. I can't wait to get back to some kind of stability where I really have time to write. The idea's are still coming, fast and furiously, but I don't have time to get them down. : ) My freelance business is picking up too.

I got back from Ohio a few days ago. We're actually signing the paperwork for the new house today and will get the keys. We won't move in until November 18th. I'm happy to report Raymi is doing much better! She's been able to walk a little more this week, which I'm thrilled about. I hope you have a wonderful day (it's probably almost evening now where you are)!

You leave a nice image. It's the kind of background that seems made to be contemplated in black and white, I can't imagine it in color, I think it would lose all its strength. A difficult photo to take because of the light contrasts it has. Thanks for sharing dear @ericvancewalton . A big hug from Maracay.

Thank you! When I changed the filter to black and white it really did seem to elevate the shot. It made it look a little more vintage to match the Victorian buildings the line the street. I hope you're having a great week!

These are the things I love about taking photos, that when you stop at a certain moment to look at an image, they have the power to transport your memory to the exact moment in which you took the photo, and thanks to that you can relive that moment
What a beautiful photo, I love how the buildings look in the shadows within the fog, I don't think I've ever photographed fog, it would be great to be able to try.
Thank you very much dear friend @ericvancewalton for sharing this photo and the beautiful moment
Have a beautiful night

Thank you! Photos do really capture the feelings of that moment in time! I think I was trying to keep our dog Amstel from grabbing a chicken wing someone had thrown out of a car while I was taking this. Lol. That happened quite a bit around here because of all the restaurants. I hope your week has been a great one!

Your photo is very nice, Eric. The color of the photo is black and white and has a classic feel with ancient buildings. Some photos can be the best thing in our life if we have lots of memories there. Have a nice day.

Thank you Eliana!

This is an interesting question 😂 I still have some old time photos that were very interesting to me. I hope to show them up.

It is a difficult question. I think that the best photo I took is more than one as I take at least 1000 photos whenever I go to holiday :)

The photo has a very beautiful ambiance, especially with the foggy weather.

It reminds me of the movie, The Fog.

That was a freaky one!

Yes, sir, it was.

The morning was foggy, the photo is amazing

Good afternoon to all of us.. greetings for today. May we all be the best for all of us.
