I have always, always, always wanted a VW Beetle - my initials are VW, after all, and it seems very fitting. The closest I came was a VW Rabbit.
I got the car when I was in Calgary, knowing that I was soon to drive cross country - 2,500km - to Windsor, ON for graduate school. I ended up driving even farther than that, to Delaware initially, then would roadtrip monthly for a weekend between Windsor and Delaware.
When I left Calgary I packed everything I owned into the back of the car and made the long drive. No Air-conditioning. No tape player. Just straight up standard transmission, an open window, and a lot of static on the radio for 3 1/2 days of straight driving, 12 hours/day.
I miss that car.
I like those! Fun cars.
I have a few VW's. The best being a fastback fuel injected 1600 that I really liked. Again, not the coolest car but reliable. Something like your cross country road trip would have been within its capabilities.
Also, how good are road trips! Love them.
Road trips are one of the best ways to soothe the soul! My current vehicle is perhaps slightly more comfortable than that old Rabbit which really means I can stuff one of the kids into it for some company. Yes, it is definitely time for another trip.
