"Who thinks that the problems of this world can be solved by means of isolationism and protectionism, that makes a huge mistake," Merkel said in the parliament.
- The individual countries respond to the problems of increasing calls for isolation and restriction of trade. I am convinced that protectionism is not an outlet because it hurts everyone, "said Merkel.
She emphasized that her goal was "to send the G20 a strong signal behind free markets and against isolation and the multinational trading system."
"Only together we will be able to find the right answers to the central questions of our times," said the head of the German government. "Only together, and not acting on the national level, can we achieve something," she added.
Merkel stressed that great challenges such as global warming, the threat of terrorism or the migration crisis must be solved together.
Merkel will meet at noon with the heads of state and government of European countries, including UK Prime Minister Theresa May, who will be attending the G20 summit.
