Silver Eagle Ring Update: 2 weeks in~ Crazy Patina!!

in #metaldetecting6 years ago (edited)

About 2 weeks ago I did a post showing the Eagle Ring that I found Metal Detecting. It had such a strong Patina that I wasn't sure if it was Bronze or Silver! It's marked 925 but I've never seen silver with this level of heavy brown toning. The photo (below right) is the before photo and the (below left) is the after photo showing what it looks like now. I've been wearing it every day for 2 weeks and the silver is starting to shine through, mostly on the beak and top of head. I want to let it wear naturally rather than using acids or abrasives.

You can see from the back of the band how the tarnish is layered up, it's so thick a layer you can catch your fingernail on it (like it's been painted). Over the silver is a black layer, then over that is a brown layer. I can now see the makers marks on the inside of the ring it says: G:&S© 86 USA So it could have been sat in the river mud for over 30 years before I dug it out! I'll keep you updated as it turns more silver with time ⌛

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

Oh man, the inside is gnarly.Be careful you don’t get a rash. ☺️

Hahaha yeah I did think that when I started wearing it straight out the ground that it might give a rash with all the black slimy mud, because it's silver oxide it should be clean and germ free I hope :-)

Nice find!

This ring is becoming better and better.

What a find thats a real nice casting! Toothbrush and i believe ketchup will get rid of a lot of rhe grime

Thanks mate I haven't heard about using ketchup but will try it some time I presume it's the acidity of the sauce 🍅
