Heart Attack Symptoms: What To Do in an Emergency
What is a heart attack?
A heart attack occurs when a blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by that artery begins to die. The longer a person goes without treatment, the greater the damage. Symptoms of a heart attack may be immediate and intense. More often, though, symptoms start slowly and persist for hours, days or weeks before a heart attack. Unlike with sudden cardiac arrest, the heart usually does not stop beating during a heart attack. The heart attack symptoms in women can be different than men.
Heart attack warning signs
There are a number of warning signs that you (or someone you know) may be having a heart attack:
Chest pain or discomfortPain in the upper body such as the neck, jaw, upper back, or armsA squeezing feeling or tightness in the chestDifficulty breathingSweatingNausea or vomitingDizziness or lightheadedness
What to Do Before Paramedics Arrive
Try to keep the person calm, and have them sit or lie down.If the person is not allergic to aspirin, have them chew and swallow a baby aspirin. (It works faster when chewed and not swallowed whole.)If the person stops breathing, you or someone else who’s qualified should perform CPR right away. If you don't know CPR, the 911 operator can help you until EMS personnel arrive.
