Extraterrestrial Diamonds are very common in the universe.
--> The heat, pressure and carbon in our universe are enough to form massive diamonds on different planets. Such diamonds are commonly formed on gas giant planets. Such as Saturn and Jupiter.
--> Recently, scientists found new evidence of diamond rains in Neptune and Uranus. The atmosphere of these ice-giants consists of hydrogen and methane.
Intense lighting converts methane into pure hydrogen and carbon. These clouds of carbon clump together to form Graphite. Extreme pressure on these planets turns graphite into precious diamonds.
--> Under the effect of gravity diamonds fall to the planet's core.
Researches were able to recreate conditions present on these planets in the lab. And successfully produce diamond rain.
--> It is not the first time that diamonds have been discovered in space.
Microscopic diamonds not much larger than molecules are abundant in meteorites. About 3% of the carbon in these meteorites are in the form of nano-diamonds. Diamonds in meteorites form when asteroids collide. Such collisions crush carbon into tiny diamonds.
Almahata Sitta meteorite, which fell into Earth's atmosphere in 2008 contained fragments that consisted of tiny diamonds.
--> Tiny, sub-millimetre diamonds have been found at Meteor Crater in Arizona.
--> A new **White Dwarf diamond star ** has been found by Astronomers.
This star has a temperature of 2700c and has been cooling for 11billion years. Upon cooling the carbon has crystallized, forming a huge diamond in space.
--> Diamonds might be rare on Earth, but the universe is full of them.
